The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant in a learning capacity, under close supervision by the Resident Engineer (RE). The Student Assistant will assist in a wide range of services related to the District 04 Construction Unit, including contractor quality job control, assistance with quantity control, and contractor bill review.
Terms of EmploymentPart‑time, temporary, non‑benefited student position. Employment is position requires a pre‑employment background check, including employment history, professional references, criminal, educational verification, or DMV clearance, as required by University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring agency.
EligibilityMust be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at an accredited college or university on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least six semester units (undergraduate) or nine quarter units, or four semester units (graduate) or six quarter units. Students' declared majors must match those listed in the posting.

$18.28 – $28.16 per hour.
Work ScheduleFlexible workdays and hours, Monday‑Friday, 8 AM‑5 PM. Final schedule determined by supervisor. During the academic year, up to 24 hours per week; during breaks, up to 40 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
- Completion of each term with minimum unit requirements for undergraduate and graduate classifications, with proof collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Working knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction operations, and office procedures.
- Ability to understand technical instructions.
- Computer proficiency:
Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
- Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies give preference to a qualified applicant up to 26 years old who is/has been a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
- Assist in office engineering work under the direction of the Office Engineer and the Resident Engineer.
- Assist field inspectors in field inspections and surveying.
- Scan and upload project documents into the construction web‑log system and cross‑check pay‑item quantity calculations.
- Study and understand Standard Specifications, Project Plans, Project Special Provisions, and other Departmental Construction procedures to assist the Resident Engineer.
- Attend construction‑related training(s) provided by the construction unit.
Sitting for extended periods; frequently standing and walking; manual dexterity and hand‑eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners.
Working ConditionsWork performed in an office and in the field. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. May require occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties.
