Parks and Grounds Maintenance Workers are an essential part of maintaining Sonoma County. These positions work at locations across the County, maintaining parks, bike trails, open spaces and other landscaped areas. Locations include Spring Lake, Sonoma Valley, Central Area, Coastal (Bodega Bay, Gualala – Stillwater), and Russian River park areas.
Responsibilities- Perform landscaping work such as pruning, mowing, irrigation repair, weeding, planting, and spreading mulch
- Maintain landscaping and grounds keeping
- Service, maintain, and operate landscaping power equipment and irrigation systems
- Maintain Park signage, buildings, equipment, gardens, and grounds
- Assist with construction and repairs throughout various parks and marinas within Sonoma County
- Assist with installing park signage, interpretative displays, banners, and other graphic materials
- Experience with general landscaping duties, parks and grounds-maintenance, and/or construction projects performed outdoors
- Familiarity with irrigation and plant knowledge
- Experience with landscaping tools such as mowers, string trimmers, and blowers
- Excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to interact with staff, external customers, and the public
- Strong problem‑solving skills and the determination to be solution‑oriented
- The ability to thrive in a fast‑paced work environment that requires shifting gears quickly
- The ability to make independent decisions, be a self‑starter, and enjoy staying busy
Note:
This position requires a valid class C driver's license, wearing a uniform, and working in various weather conditions. Work hours may vary, and include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Extra‑help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra‑help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as long‑term disability insurance coverage, accrual of vacation, participation in the County retirement program, or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra‑help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year.
These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re‑employed on an extra help basis. Extra‑help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage.
This recruitment is being conducted to fill multiple temporary, extra‑help Parks and Grounds Maintenance Worker I positions in the Regional Parks Department. This employment list may also be used to fill future extra‑help positions as they occur during the active status of this list.
Minimum QualificationsExperience:
Any combination of education, training, and experience which would likely provide for possession of the knowledge and abilities herein. Normally, this would include some experience in construction, repair, maintenance, or groundskeeping work which included the use of trucks, light mechanical machines, and hand tools.
License:
Possession of a valid driver license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
The positions advertised on this announcement requires possession of a valid California Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the techniques related to the care of lawns, plants, shrubs, and trees, including propagation, planting, cultivation, pruning, and fertilization; the calibration and mixing of herbicide or pesticide sprays, and of other means of controlling weeds, insects, and parasites; basic construction materials, safety practices, and tools commonly used in parks and building construction, repair maintenance, and grounds keeping work; carpentry, welding, masonry, plumbing, and electrical systems;
