The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant to be an entry-level member of a field survey crew. The student assistant will work under the close supervision of a Transportation Surveyor Party Chief or Lead Worker. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist with and perform routine, sub-professional survey-related duties in a field or office setting.
Responsibilitiesand Duties
- In a learning capacity, collaborate with the Party Chief and survey crew to ensure complete and accurate data collection, note keeping, and field sketches.
- Perform basic land survey calculations including unit conversions and other calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, algebra and geometry.
- Assist in cleaning, maintaining, calibrating, inventorying equipment and materiel, including surveying tools, hand/power tools, and vehicles.
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable) at one of the accredited colleges or universities on the affiliation list. Enrollments requirements: at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students. Major must match the listed majors in the job posting.

Majors/Fields of Study: Engineering or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Work ScheduleFlexible workdays and hours, Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM. Final schedule determined by the supervisor.
Compensation$18.28 – $28.16 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must meet term-based unit requirements for undergraduate and graduate classifications; proof collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Must have the ability to drive a vehicle in heavy freeway or highway traffic and in off-road areas; able to work at locations with adverse conditions.
- Must be tolerant of working in close proximity to high-speed traffic and heavy equipment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license.
- Preference guidance exists for applicants up to age 26 who have been dependent children in foster care, homeless youth, formerly incarcerated youth, or victims of human trafficking, under Government Code Section 18220.
- Support the field survey crew in data collection, note keeping, and field sketches under supervision.
- Assist with basic land survey calculations and related tasks.
- Assist in equipment maintenance, calibration, and inventory management.
Sit for extended periods; stand and walk, manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination; normal hearing and vision or with reasonable accommodation; able to use standard office equipment and field tools.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in office and field environments, including outdoor settings in various weather conditions. May involve bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing.
