About the Position
The City of Santa Rosa’s City Bus transit system is seeking Bus Operators to safely operate a transit bus, transport passengers on fixed routes, and interact with the public. Training is provided for a 5‑8 week period, after which operators may continue as part‑time or full‑time employees.
Responsibilities- Safely drive and operate a transit bus on fixed routes.
- Locate and board passengers at designated bus stops.
- Discharge passengers at desired destinations.
- Assist elderly and disabled persons in boarding and leaving the bus.
- Collect and account for fares.
- Maintain ridership information according to departmental procedures.
- Operate a mobile radio and public address system.
- Complete incident and accident report forms as necessary.
- Provide information and directions to the public.
- Observe and report hazardous road conditions and vehicle and passenger safety concerns.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Valid Class B California motor vehicle operator’s license with medical certificate.
- Valid driver’s license at time of application and satisfactory driving record meeting City of Santa Rosa Driving History Standard.
- No commercial driving experience required; training provided.
- Ability to read street maps, transit schedules, and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Capacity to handle physical demands such as sitting extended periods, moving wheelchairs, and working in various weather conditions.
- Ability to work flexible and irregular schedules, including weekends, holidays, and early‑morning to late‑evening shifts.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism at all times.
- On‑the‑job training (5‑8 weeks) to learn safe bus operation and public engagement.
- Shift differential for hours worked between 4:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
- Paid holidays: 7 paid holidays and up to 8 paid floating holidays for full‑time operators; part‑time operators receive in‑lieu holiday pay equal to 15 days per year.
- $500 wellness benefit in January of each year, prorated for part‑time employees.
- Retirement through CalPERS.

All new Bus Operators are classified as part‑time. Part‑time operators work 37‑40 hours per week during training and variable hours thereafter. Full‑time positions may become available for eligible part‑time operators. Bus operators may be required to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays.
