Job Description

DEFINITION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to limited or non-English speaking students in an assigned learning environment; tutor students individually or in small groups; prepare instructional materials and perform general clerical duties in support of learning activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to limited and non-English speaking students in a classroom or assigned learning environment.
  • Assist in instructing limited-English speaking students in English as a second language and oral language development.
  • Provide instructional presentations in a designated second language as directed by the teacher.
  • Translate written materials and interpret for limited and non-English speaking parents and students at meetings, conferences and in the classroom in a designated second language.
  • Administer and score language tests to students to determine level of English proficiency.
  • Prepare instructional materials by sorting, assembling, duplicating, and laminating materials.
  • Prepare and maintain inventories of materials and equipment used in instructional activities.
  • Maintain records related to student attendance and grades.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment.
  • Confer with teacher regarding student progress and problems.
  • Tutor students individually or in small groups, reinforcing and following up on the teacher’s lessons.
  • Attend in services, workshops and meetings as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

    Knowledge of:

    • Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.
    • Methods and techniques used in instructing limited and non-English speaking students.
    • Basic subjects taught in elementary school.
    • Interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Basic recordkeeping methods.

    Ability to:

    • Learn and implement instructional techniques utilized with limited non-English speaking students.
    • Translate written materials and interpret for parents, students and teachers in a designated second language.
    • Maintain records related to student progress and grades.
    • Understand and apply rules, regulations, procedures and policies.
    • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
    • Perform routine clerical tasks in support of instructional activities.
    • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

    Licenses and other Certification:

    Some positions in this classification may be required to possess a valid California Driver’s License in order to drive personal vehicle from site to site to conduct work.

    NCLB Certification required in one of three ways:

    • Possession of an Associates Degree (AA).
    • Completion of 48 college semester units (official transcripts required).
    • Completion and passage of the District-approved NCLB proficiency test.

    Training and

    Experience:

    Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience with school age children in an organized setting.

    Working Conditions: Elementary school classroom or other learning environment.
