Upcoming Scheduled Salary Increase of 3% Effective July 2026 This vacancy may be underfilled with an Associate Traffic Engineer. Under the general direction of the Principal Traffic Engineer, this mid‑management, at‑will classification performs professional level traffic engineering work involving the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of traffic control equipment and facilities to ensure the safety of the motoring public. The role may include supervisory activities such as assigning work, monitoring project progress, providing technical assistance, training, and evaluating the performance of subordinate professional and technical staff.
It requires managing highly visible and sensitive projects with minimal oversight while supervising subordinate staff and managing multiple projects.
- Design, supervise, and participate in the preparation of drawings, maps, grade sheets, profiles, plans, and specifications related to a variety of traffic engineering projects.
- Perform complex traffic studies.
- Assist in establishing priority schedules.
- Analyze and implement traffic signal timing plans.
- Analyze accident history.
- Conduct traffic condition and speed surveys, traffic counts and volume analyses, accident and parking surveys, and intersection capacity analyses.
- Prepare traffic signal, sign and striping and traffic control plans, work orders, and cost estimates.
- Manage overload, oversize, and annual haul permit program.
- Prepare and maintain logs, reports, records, and schedules.
- Evaluate the need and justification for traffic signals, stop signs, and other traffic control devices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- Experience (Senior Traffic Engineer): Five (5) years of progressively responsible and recent traffic engineering experience, including at least three (3) years at an Associate Traffic or Civil Engineer level.
- Experience (Associate Traffic Engineer): Three (3) years of progressively responsible and recent traffic engineering experience.
- Registration as a Professional Traffic Engineer in the State of California is required at the time of hire; civil engineer registration may substitute if significant traffic engineering experience is demonstrated.
- Criminal history investigation through the California Department of Justice and a thorough background check.
- Valid Class C California driver’s license at time of appointment; a safe driving record is required and must be maintained during employment.
- Designation as Disaster Service Workers; employees must affirm the loyalty oath and complete required training.
- Non‑telecommuting position.
