Plate Fitter

A plate fitter is a skilled tradesperson who lays out, measures, cuts, and assembles heavy metal plates to construct or repair large industrial structures like pressure vessels, tanks, and bridges. They interpret blueprints, operate metalworking machinery, and join parts using tack welding, bolting, or riveting.

Blueprint Interpretation:
Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to plan the sequence of tasks.

Layout and Marking:
Lay out reference points, center lines, and dimensions on metal plates using tools like scribes, soapstones, and templates.

Material Preparation:
Operate heavy-duty machinery such as cutting torches, brake presses, shears, and drills to cut and shape heavy metal components.

Fitting and Assembly:
Lift, position, and align fabricated metal parts together using hoists and cranes.

Fastening:
Secure aligned plates and sections together using tack welding, bolting, or riveting to form complete subassemblies.

Quality Control:
Inspect finished assemblies to ensure they meet precise tolerances, structural integrity, and industry safety standards.

Mechanical & Technical Aptitude:
Strong understanding of geometry, blueprint reading, and the properties of metals.

Tool Proficiency:
Experience with oxy-fuel/plasma torches, grinders, micrometers, and welding equipment.

Physical Stamina:
Ability to stand for long periods, perform heavy lifting, and work in confined spaces or at heights.

Certifications:

Vocational training, apprenticeships, or AWS (American Welding Society) certifications are highly valued by employers.
