Position: Field Inspector (Compliance/Maintenance Specialist II or III) - Land Development - R21021

Field Inspector (Compliance Maintenance Specialist II/III)

Sarasota County Government is seeking a Field Inspector (Compliance Maintenance Specialist II/III) to join our Planning and Development Services – Land Development team. In this role, you'll work closely with the Land Development Engineer to inspect site development projects and ensure construction aligns with approved plans, County standards, and federal, state, and local regulations. You'll also review, issue, and inspect Right-of-Way Use and Culvert permits, helping projects move forward while maintaining compliance and quality standards.

We're looking for someone with a strong understanding of construction practices, plans, and specifications, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to maintain accurate records and reports. To be considered, you'll need a high school diploma (or equivalent) and at least 3 years of experience in construction, maintenance, applicable trades, or technical/supervisory support for construction projects. Relevant college or university training may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Experience with surveying, traffic control standards, code enforcement procedures, and operating tools such as levels and pipe locators is highly valued, with surveyor experience required for advancement to the Level III position. In this role, you will:

  • Inspect site development projects to ensure construction aligns with approved plans and County standards.
  • Help ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, ordinances, and permitting requirements.
  • Review, issue, and inspect Right-of-Way Use and Culvert permits.
  • Serve as a key point of contact throughout construction, collaborating with engineers, contractors, property owners, and County teams.
  • Investigate citizen concerns related to active construction projects and help resolve issues.
  • Conduct field inspections, document project updates, and identify code violations or needed changes.
  • Review construction plans, specifications, and materials to confirm they meet required standards.
  • Maintain project records, support final inspections, and prepare clear written and verbal updates on project progress.

Work Hours:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • Typical Schedule:

    Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (no weekends!)

As a reminder, all county employees are considered essential and must be prepared to protect and support the community and its citizens. Each employee, without exception, will have a duty assignment and be required to work during a disaster or declared emergency.

Compliance Maintenance Specialist II (Starting Pay Range: $22.94/hr up to $28.68/hr)

To be considered, you must have the following:

  • High School Diploma, or its equivalent, and 3+ years of experience in construction/maintenance, contract applicable construction trades, or in a field providing technical/supervisory services to construction/maintenance contractors.
  • OR:
    College or university-level training in an appropriate field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required construction/maintenance experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License within 30 days of hire.

Compliance Maintenance Specialist III (Starting Pay Range: $24.74/hr up to $31.54/hr)

To be considered, you must have the following:

  • High School Diploma, or its equivalent, and 4+ years of related experience (2 of which must be in related inspecting experience).
  • OR:
    College or university-level training in an appropriate field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required construction experience.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License within 30 days of hire.
