Job Overview
As an Electronics Technologist in the Canadian Coast Guard, you will work as part of a skilled multidisciplinary team to support essential technical services. Key responsibilities include installing, commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting electronic equipment on land, at remote sites, and onboard vessels.
Key Responsibilities
Install and commission new electronic equipment, including ship and harbour radars, gyrocompasses, ultrasonic depth finders, satellite positioning and communications equipment, radio telecommunications equipment, communication control and networking systems, public address systems, and phone exchange equipment.
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance of existing equipment.
Program computer network equipment in workshops.
Respond to outages by traveling to remote sites or vessels, including helicopter flights if required.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Secondary school diploma (High School) and completion of an acceptable training program in electronics technology, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Experience:
Experience using computer software: word processing (e.g., Microsoft Word), database, spreadsheet (e.g., Microsoft Excel), and presentation software (e.g., Microsoft PowerPoint).
Knowledge:
Electronics theory used in maintaining electronic equipment in communications, radars, navigational aids, and computer microprocessor-based systems.
Digital and analog theory.
Basic electronic test equipment.
Abilities:
Effective written communication.
Effective oral communication.

Judgement and thoughtful decision making.

Experience:
Maintaining land-based navigational or communication equipment.
Maintaining ship-based navigational or communication equipment.
Installing land-based communication or navigation equipment.
Installing ship-based communication or navigation equipment.
Using test equipment such as power meters, signal generators, oscilloscope.
Knowledge:
Optical and radio-frequency electronics.
Radio wave propagation and antennas.
Network fundamentals.

Conditions of Employment
Must obtain a Health Canada pre‑placement fitness‑to‑work assessment.
Must possess a valid driver’s license free of restrictions.
Must agree to deploy anywhere in Canada during the first 7 years, including isolated posts.
Must be willing to work on ships, including at sea.
Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, short‑notice shifts, and a 24/7 operational environment.
Must be willing to travel as required, including by ship, boat, automobile, plane, helicopter, ATV, and snowmobile.
Must not be affected by vertigo, motion sickness, or claustrophobia.
