Hydrovac Truck Operator
The Hydrovac Truck Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant execution of hydrovac excavation activities across ROHL Alberta project sites. This role supports critical infrastructure work by exposing underground utilities, performing precision excavation, and maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity in the field.
Key Responsibilities- Operate hydrovac trucks and associated equipment in accordance with ROHL safety standards, project requirements, and regulatory guidelines
- Perform hydrovac excavation activities including day lighting, slot trenching, debris removal, and exposing underground utilities and infrastructure
- Safely operate vacuum boom systems, extensions, and high‑pressure water equipment with precision and control
- Set up and verify proper grounding and/or bonding procedures prior to operations
- Conduct pre‑trip, daily, and ongoing equipment inspections; identify, document, and address deficiencies in compliance with applicable regulations
- Ensure equipment, materials, and loads are properly secured and transported safely to and from job sites
- Maintain compliance with road safety regulations, DOT requirements, and ROHL Health & Safety Program expectations
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and overall condition of assigned vehicles and equipment
- Utilize and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Perform general excavation support tasks including back filling, compaction, and site clean‑up
- Work safely around energized utilities and within high‑risk or sensitive environments
- Verify utility locates and site markings prior to excavation; escalate any discrepancies
- Maintain required clearances and adhere to safe digging practices when working near buried infrastructure
- Complete hazard assessments (FLHA/JHA), tailboard meetings, and required safety documentation
- Report incidents, near misses, and hazards in accordance with ROHL procedures (e.g., CORFIX or equivalent)
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and coordinate repairs to minimize equipment downtime
- Assist with site setup including signage, barriers, and traffic control in accordance with regulations
- Follow environmental protection procedures including spill prevention, containment, and proper material disposal
- Collaborate with crews, supervisors, and subcontractors to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project schedules
- Identify and proactively communicate safety hazards, operational issues, and project risks
- Support additional field or operational duties as required
- Valid Class 1 or Class 3 Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement and clean driving abstract
- 2+ years hydrovac operating experience considered a strong asset
- Strong understanding of safe work practices, particularly around underground and energized utilities
- Experience working in underground utility, telecommunications, or infrastructure construction environments
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic troubleshooting and minor equipment repairs
- Physically capable of performing demanding field work, including lifting up to 75 lbs and working in various weather conditions
- Ability to travel and work out of town based on project requirements
- Ability to work extended shifts and rotational schedules in remote or high‑demands environments
- Valid First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Ground Disturbance Level II certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently when required
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism
