Duties

Collecting, Analyzing, and Refining Requirements. Designs, develops, maintains, and documents application software requirements being developed for the squadron. Consults with and advises managers, functional users, and senior scientists to develop unique and fully developed requirements necessary to fulfill and automate their IT demands.

Planning, Design, and Documenting. Applies the most current and effective software engineering principles and disciplines to the analysis and design of IT solutions. Provides technical guidance for the procurement and/or developments of advanced technology software and services. Authors IT documentation to include, development of functional descriptions, maintenance manuals, test and implementation plans, cost analysis, specification documents, and feasibility studies.

Writing, Debugging, and Maintaining Source Code. Develops new innovative methodologies, or modifies existing, program source code, application program interfaces (API), graphical user interfaces (GUI) and/or component logic. Leads squadron efforts to directly perform software maintenance and development of unique applications software on a UNIX/WINDOWS mixed platform using such programming languages as C/C++, Java, Perl, Motif/X11, GTK, Qt, Scheme/Lisp/guild, FORTRAN, PL/SQL and/or other programming languages.

Application Testing and Quality Assurance. Responsibilities include overall systems and software engineering responsibility of the entire squadron, development of action plans, identification and programming of resource requirements; development of briefings, technical reports, and other required documentation; budget preparation and execution; coordination of other activities to support assigned projects.

All new DCIPS employees are required to complete a two-year DCIPS trial period.

A bachelor's degree in physical science, computer science, or a related IT field is highly desired.
Experience working in an operational laboratory, or experience with integration of software with information management equipment is highly desired.
Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period.
Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
