Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Shop & Field Mechanic — Anderson Underground Anderson Underground is hiring an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to support utility construction operations out of our Sauk Rapids, MN location.
This role is responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, inspections, field support, and repair coordination on equipment and vehicles used in underground utility construction. The mechanic will work on a wide range of equipment including directional drills, plows, trucks, trailers, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, trenchers, and other specialized utility construction equipment.
This is not an entry-level mechanic role. We are looking for someone who can work independently, troubleshoot equipment issues, manage repair priorities, communicate with crews and supervisors, coordinate with third-party repair shops, and help keep equipment ready for daily field operations.

Sauk Rapids, MN
Schedule:
Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.Overtime:
Expected during peak maintenance seasons, especially winter maintenance and equipment return periods
Pay: $30-$35/hr depending on experience, skill level, and travel flexibility
Travel:
Travel to job sites may be required across Minnesota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, and other project locations based on business needs
Per Diem:
Paid when traveling, based on company policy
Vehicle:
Company vehicle provided for work-related travel
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role does not directly supervise employees, but will be expected to help coordinate shop priorities, communicate with crews, support job site equipment needs, and work with third-party mechanic shops and vendors as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Diagnose, repair, and maintain utility construction equipment including directional drills, plows, trucks, trailers, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, trenchers, and related equipment.
Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and in-field repairs to reduce downtime and keep crews moving.
Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, diesel, and emissions-related issues using tools, software, service manuals, and hands-on experience.
Travel to job sites as needed to assess equipment issues and support field crews.
Coordinate with third-party mechanic shops, vendors, and outside repair facilities when repairs need to be outsourced.
Communicate equipment status, repair timelines, parts needs, and downtime updates to crews, supervisors, and management.
Maintain accurate repair notes, service records, work orders, inspections, parts usage, and maintenance documentation.
Use basic computer systems, email, payroll/timekeeping tools, maintenance tracking systems, and company programs as needed.
Support shop organization, safety procedures, DOT/OSHA compliance, and seasonal equipment maintenance.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.Valid Class A CDL with a clean driving record.
Minimum 3 years of mechanical experience with heavy trucks, utility equipment, underground construction equipment, or heavy construction equipment.
Hands-on experience repairing and maintaining directional drills, plows, or similar underground utility equipment.
Experience with hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics, diesel engines, and emissions systems.
Ability to diagnose and repair equipment independently.
Ability to travel to job sites as needed.
Ability to work overtime during peak maintenance seasons.
Basic computer skills, including email, documentation, and company systems.
Ability to pass background check and drug screen.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical or vocational certification.
OSHA 10 certification.
Experience working in utility construction, underground construction, fiber, telecom, gas, or related field operations.
Experience coordinating with third-party mechanic shops, vendors, or outside repair facilities.
Experience with payroll, timekeeping systems, work orders, repair documentation, or maintenance tracking systems.
Experience managing repair schedules, parts inventory, equipment inspections, or shop workload.

Strong communication skills with crews, supervisors, vendors, and management.
Ability to prioritize repairs based on crew needs, safety, downtime, and equipment readiness.
Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic software, service manuals, and shop equipment.
Ability to read schematics, service manuals, technical drawings, and equipment documentation.
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate repair records.
Ability to stay organized while balancing repairs, parts, inspections, field calls, vendors, and administrative tasks.
