Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice. The RN triages patients, obtains history and vital signs, assesses patients, acts independently to initiate care in life‑threatening situations in the absence of a physician, and provides care for acutely ill and non‑acute patients. The RN performs multiple procedures, assists physicians, provides comfort to patients, families, and visitors, communicates discharge and follow‑up instructions, answers ambulance radios and gives pre‑hospital care orders, and works with sophisticated equipment in a frequently stressful environment.

May be required to take call and respond in a timely manner.

May be required to cross‑train to other areas of the surgical services department as determined by the needs of the department.

Responsibilities
  • (25%) Performs nursing assessments, intervenes appropriately and promptly, and participates in care planning.
  • (25%) Regularly assesses patient needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician and accepted standards of practice.
  • (20%) Processes physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and in a timely manner, and follows up regarding medication changes and order clarifications.
  • (15%) Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or facilitates changes to improve patient care.
  • (15%) Actively participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with team members, utilizing current information.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Uses physical assessment techniques (auscultation, percussion, palpation, observation) to identify physical problems and patient care needs.
  • Recognizes self‑limitations and seeks appropriate resources.
  • Possesses clinical competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture, and physical assessment.
  • Reassesses patient health status and identifies significant changes in conditions.
  • Individualizes plan of care.
  • Coordinates prescribed plans with orders of the health‑care team.
  • Communicates pertinent aspects of care to patients, families, or other health‑care workers.
  • Initiates home‑health referrals when appropriate.
  • Sets priorities and implements nursing measures that correlate with identified plan and standard of care.
  • Recognizes change in patient condition and takes action to manage, reduce, or eliminate symptoms and promote comfort.
  • Demonstrates respect for patient dignity and privacy.
  • Documents nursing intervention and patient response.
  • Maintains safe patient environment and takes actions to prevent risk situations.
  • Provides patient and family education, explains all procedures, utilizes available educational materials, and documents instructions given to family.
  • Has effective interpersonal skills with customers.
  • Assists peers in patient‑care activities.
  • Recognizes stress in others and uses positive coping techniques.
  • Sets goals and prioritizes Emergency Department care to patients according to acuity.
  • Is accountable in following medical‑center policy and procedures and attendance.
  • Participates in continuing education program, computer‑based learning modules, ED in‑service training, and ED Skills Day.
Certifications and Licensures
  • BLS:
    Basic Life Support – equivalent experience within 3 months of hire or transfer.
  • RN:
    Registered Nurse – credential required.
  • PALS:
    Pediatric Advanced Life Support – equivalent experience within 18 months of hire or transfer.
  • ACLS:
    Advanced Cardiac Life Support – equivalent experience within 18 months of hire or transfer.
  • Fingerprinting – credential required.
Required Education
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing, or Bachelor's degree in nursing with one year of experience preferred.
Other Information Experience, Training and Skills
  • One‑year experience as an RN, graduate nurse, or nurse intern required.
  • One‑year OR experience preferred.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, trauma, grief, and death.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or substitutes.
