Position Overview /Duties INTRODUCTION:The incumbent serves as Derrick Boat Engineer, St Marys River Section, Soo Project Office (SPO), Detroit District. The incumbent serves as the engineer assigned to one of the derrick boats stationed on the St Marys River, engaged in navigation and hydropower maintenance.

Description Of Assignment/Duties- Computes ballast water levels to ensure derrick boat stability is maintained based on crane lifts, excavator operational conditions, etc. and considering vessel fuel levels, ancillary deck equipment and material weights, etc.
- Troubleshoots machine problems in accordance with sound marine mechanical practices.
- Maintains a written and computerized log of all maintenance, maximizing Facilities and Equipment Maintenance (FEM) use in coordination with Facility Operations Specialist.
- Responsible for round-the-clock watches, when scheduled, to ensure efficient, continuous operation of the plant.
- Performs major overhauls as prescribed by the equipment manufacturer or as the operating condition of the equipment warrants.
- Always adhering to manufacturer’s recommendations and specifications in maintaining and repairing equipment.
This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Applicant Qualifications- Experience Requirement: I have the ability to perform tasks including independently operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing, complex, integrated systems of a floating derrick boat or a vessel of similar complexity. This includes performing maintenance and repairs on large-scale diesel engines, electrical generation and distribution systems (AC/DC), hydraulic systems, and other auxiliary machinery. Your experience must show that you can work from technical manuals and schematics to diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical problems to ensure the safe and continuous operation of the vessel and its equipment.

- Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
- Dexterity and Safety
- Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
- Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)
- One-year probationary period may be required.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 75% of the time.
- Appointment may be subject to suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Position is designated as Non-Sensitive-No access security clearance.
- The incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in accomplishment of assigned duties.
- The incumbent shall maintain annual rigging and applicable operator certifications.
- Heavy physical lifting is required of this position. Incumbent must be able to lift objects weighing up to and including 50 pounds. Incumbent must be able to perform all physical requirements of this position.
- Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical to meet physical requirements. This position requires an annual physical.
- NOTE:
This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
- Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
