Communications & Public Relations Coordinator

Position Summary: Manages the communications and public relations for the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. Responsible for media relations, development of printed and digital media, full editorial responsibility for the website and the Skidaway Campus Notes, and interfacing with faculty, staff, administration, campus partners, and the general public.

Responsibilities
  • Produce news releases and articles for SkIO and UGA websites and other media.
  • Initiate and promote news coverage of SkIO research and academic programs.
  • Coordinate interactions between SkIO faculty and news media and support faculty in media engagements.
  • Serve as the external affairs point of contact for SkIO.
  • Respond to media requests for expert interviews or other news coverage needs.
  • Provide the majority of content for, and edit and publish, quarterly Skidaway Campus Notes newsletter; maintain mailing list.
  • Maintain SkIO website and social media presence (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, You Tube).
  • Shoot, edit, and produce still photographs and video for news articles, newsletters, and promotional materials.
  • Handle administrative responsibilities for Associates of Skidaway Institute Fund, including monitoring donations records, notifying members of dues, and providing acknowledgement letters.
  • Represent SkIO to outside groups, coordinate public interactions with the community, and serve as a contact point for public inquiries.
  • Plan and coordinate events such as the Evening @ Skidaway lecture series, visiting groups, and other gatherings; troubleshoot and manage event logistics.
  • Collect, summarize and store faculty activity reports.
  • Drive as needed to perform job duties.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and at least 2 years of professional experience.
  • Ability to work independently, conceptualize projects, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Creative writing, interview, research, and copy editing skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and public speaking ability.
  • Multimedia skills – Photoshop, videography, graphic design, and social media.
  • Website management experience with Word Press preferred.
Benefits & Employment Details

Employment type:

Full Time, 40 hours per week (schedule may vary).

Retirement plan: TRS or ORP.

Salary commensurate with experience.
