Position: Student Assistant - First & Second Year Experience - Flight Leaders (Spring 2026)

Job Summary

The Student Assistant will support the First & Second Year Experience on the Statesboro Campus beginning Spring 2026.

Flight Leaders will be assigned to a section of FLYT 1001 class (formerly FYE 1220) and support instructors and students in the class by serving as role models and mentors to help first-year students acclimate to college life. Additionally they will serve as a resource for FLYT 1001 instructors, and support initiatives through the Office of First and Second Year Experience, Eagle Experience Programming, and other programs designed to assist first year students with the transition to college.

Student employees cannot work more than 1300 hours in a 12‑consecutive month period.

Responsibilities
  • Complete 16 hours of training total beginning in Spring 2026
  • Host office hours
  • Support departmental programming initiatives
  • Attend all class meetings and Flight Leader Training Lab
  • Come prepared to share in discussions on lecture materials
  • Teach a minimum of one class per semester
  • Meet regularly with assigned faculty instructor
  • Support instruction of the course through communication, making referrals to campus resources, attendance tracking, grading, and mentorship of students
  • Regularly share information with students via Folio, email, and Group Me
  • Attend and participate in Eagle Experience events as well as other first year programming that happens throughout the fall semester
  • Support students struggling to adjust to first‑year academic and personal demands.
  • Additional assistance/activities may be requested per instructor throughout the semester
Shift Specifics
  • Up to 10 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule of availability
  • Attend assigned section of FLYT 1001 as well as FLYT Leader Training Lab
Required Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours or three or more graduate credit hours at Georgia Southern University.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned a minimum grade of B in FYE 1220 or equivalent
  • Have and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Experience as a mentor/tutor or in a peer leadership capacity
  • A desire to positively impact first year student success.
Proposed Salary

US $14.00 per hour – non‑exempt, paid biweekly.
