Classified Position Summary
The job of HS Child Development Assistant (Paraprofessional) is to provide a well‑organized, smoothly functioning learning environment in which three‑year‑old students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials. Assistants may be assigned to work in classrooms, offices, a media center, one‑on‑one, groups, or other environments.
Minimum Requirements- Child Development Associate (CDA), Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) in early childhood education, or equivalent coursework in early childhood education; or
- Enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate early childhood education degree, or a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least 21 years of age (except for individuals who hold an associate degree or higher early childhood teaching credential).
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint, Background Clearance, Sex Offender Registry Check, Child Abuse Registry Check.
- Valid Georgia driver’s license or State reliable transportation.
- Employment Health Examination.
- Experience working with children under age five and their families.
- Provide effective and nurturing adult‑child interactions and assist with planning and implementing learning experiences, using assessment data to promote children’s progress; operate standard office equipment and prepare accurate records; adhere to safety practices and procedures; administer first aid and prescribed medications; apply physical restraint practices; promote activities and events.
- Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios; read manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others; understand multi‑step written and oral instructions; apply concepts of grammar, punctuation, child development stages, learning styles, and classroom technology.
- Communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; set priorities; work as part of a team; adapt to changing work priorities; handle frequent interruptions; work extended hours when required.
- Administer assessments as directed by the teacher (e.g., achievement tests, diagnostics, physical coordination exercises).
- Assist students with lesson assignments, art activities, playground activities, toilet training/diaper changes, and hygiene.
- Implement activities assigned by the teacher (e.g., independent study, enrichment work, remedial tasks).
- Maintain classroom equipment, supplies, and learning aids, ensuring availability and safety.
- Monitor individual and/or groups of students in classrooms, playgrounds, field trips, libraries, lunchrooms, restrooms, bus loading/unloading, and other settings.
- Perform duties with other department workers as assigned (e.g., parent communication, sensory breaks, behavior management, bus pick‑up).
- Report observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate social behavior, rule violations).
- Respond to emergency situations (injured student, fights, etc.) and direct to appropriate personnel.
- Serve as a mandated reporter for classroom and home‑visit situations.
- Support classroom teachers in implementing appropriate behavior, curriculum, and teaching methodologies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
