Job Overview

This position is responsible for providing educational support and personal assistance for students with significant cognitive disabilities under the direction of the teacher. The incumbent reports to the Principal.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with instruction using the modified curriculum (Unique Learning System) for assigned students.
  • Instruct students 1:1, in small groups, and in whole groups, supporting the Classroom Teacher.
  • Prepare and engage in activities and supplemental lessons based on GSE Extended Content Standards.
  • Proctor the administration of the GAA 2.0.
  • Assist with physical needs and safety of students with significant cognitive disabilities, including feeding, toileting, diapering, and lifting.
  • Prepare activities as guided by the Classroom Teacher, including bulletin boards and classroom displays.
  • Participate in in‑service training programs and service‑provider trainings related to student needs.
  • Provide pertinent information to the Classroom Teacher regarding student Present Levels of Performance for IEP meetings.
  • Assist with progress monitoring of IEP goals.
  • Report information to the Classroom Teacher that ensures student safety and improved academic outcomes.
  • Support non‑instructional duties such as breakfast, snack, lunch, bathroom, and clothing routines.
  • Assist individuals or small groups of students in various educational settings (media center, computer lab, community‑based settings).
  • Assist with clerical duties under the direction of the Classroom Teacher or Principal.
  • Assist with instruction in the physical education program as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    GED or high school diploma from a GaDOE‑approved institution.
    Preferred: Associate’s degree.
  • Must meet Highly Qualified criteria for state licensure of either:
    • 2 years of college course credits.
    • Associate’s degree.
    • Passing score on the state‑approved assessment.
  • Demonstrable ability to reinforce material introduced by the teacher and guide students with enrichment, remedial, and independent work.
  • Knowledge of general office computer software applications and internet use.
  • Appropriate oral and written communication skills with students, parents, and co‑workers.
  • Physical ability, dexterity, endurance, and temperament to work with students with special needs.
  • Specialized training may be required for certain student populations (SID/PID, autism). Includes lifting students who may weigh over 100 pounds and assisting with personal activities such as feeding and toileting.
  • Preferred:
    Experience with instructional equipment, managing child behavior, and children with special needs.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel within the county as required.
Terms of Employment

Incumbents will be considered “at will”. Pay will be determined based on Grade 102 of the classified hourly scale and allowable experience as determined by Human Resources. The work calendar is a 200‑day classified calendar. This position is non‑exempt. Rev. 01/2021.

Physical and Sensory Demands

This position requires occasional heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, sitting or standing for extended periods with limited rest, and occasional exposure to communicable diseases. The incumbent must be able to lift and transport students as necessary.
