Position: SY 26-27 Science Teacher (Oatland Island Wildlife Center)

Outdoor Science Teacher

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position is responsible for teaching standards-aligned outdoor science, STEM/STEAM, and environmental education programs to students across elementary, middle, and high school grade levels to encourage students' awareness and appreciation of the environment and to broaden their knowledge and application of science concepts through experiential learning.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education Level: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Secondary Education, Science Education, a STEM field, Environmental Science, Biology, Marine Biology, Agriculture Science, Natural Resources, or a related field.
  • Experience, Skill and Certification:
    Valid Georgia Teaching Certificate or eligibility for Georgia certification in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Middle Grades Science, Secondary Science Fields (6-12) or another appropriate teaching field that demonstrates preparation to provide standards-aligned science instruction to K-12 students.
  • Three (3) years of teaching experience in Science education.
  • PREFERRED:

  • Experience or advanced preparation in informal science settings, STEM/STEAM, environmental education, outdoor education, experiential learning, or informal education.
  • Experience teaching science and/or STEM/STEAM at the elementary, middle, or high school level
  • Georgia K-5 Science Endorsement, STEM Endorsement, STEAM Endorsement, Teacher Leader Endorsement, and/or Teacher Support and Coaching Endorsement.
  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teaches skills, knowledge, and scientific practices through standards-aligned science, STEM/STEAM, environmental education, and experiential learning opportunities for students of all ages, utilizing courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instructs students in science and related subject matter specified in state law, Georgia academic standards, and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Plans and facilitates science and STEM/STEAM learning experiences involving demonstrations, investigations, discussions, student experiments, engineering design, and hands-on learning activities.
  • Demonstrates scientific concepts through the use of scientific equipment, experiments, live animals, natural resources, models, teacher-prepared materials, and other appropriate instructional aids.
  • Differentiates instruction and learning experiences to effectively engage elementary, middle, and high school students with varying developmental levels, backgrounds, and learning needs.
  • Integrates literacy, academic vocabulary, scientific discourse, evidence-based reasoning, mathematics, engineering, technology, and other appropriate content-area strategies into science learning experiences.
  • Evaluates student growth in scientific knowledge, skills, practices, and understanding through appropriate formal and informal assessment strategies.
  • Selects and requests books, instructional aids, science equipment, materials, and supplies and maintains inventory records as required.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities, professional learning, and continued study of current science and STEM/STEAM standards, instructional practices, environmental education, and experiential learning.
  • Develops, reviews, and revises standards-aligned curriculum, lessons, student materials, and educational programs to support district instructional priorities.
  • Conducts outdoor educational programs in all weather conditions for school children and adults on various science topics, including wetlands (salt and fresh water environments), ecosystems, natural history, animal behaviors and characteristics, adaptations, environmental science, conservation, and environmental education awareness and issues.
  • Connects Oatland Island Wildlife Center's animals, habitats, ecosystems, natural resources, and facilities to appropriate Georgia Science Standards and district instructional priorities.
  • Walks 1-2 miles per day on uneven natural surfaces and works outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Assists with maintenance and preparation of trails, grounds, gardens, educational spaces, habitats, and other program areas as appropriate.
  • Works extensively with students, educators, families, volunteers, community partners, and members of the public.
  • Conducts off-site educational programs at schools, libraries, community organizations, and other locations.
  • Regularly handles approved animals for public and educational programs, including but not limited to snakes, turtles, alligators, armadillos, opossums, birds of prey, and other program animals, as trained and assigned.
  • Assists with animal-related program responsibilities, including feeding, shifting, transporting, raking, setting up educational areas, and cleaning areas and crates as trained and assigned.
