- Model functionality of aircraft systems and their intersystem dependencies.
- Assign aircraft functions to supporting systems.
- Assess the impact of system functional losses to the aircraft.
- Assess system design changes for their functional effect on the aircraft.
- Use cause and effect techniques to classify the importance of components based on failure effect.
- Calculate probability of failure occurrence using Boolean Algebra via Fault Tree analysis.
- Work with system design engineers to improve system operation.
- Become proficient in various aircraft system designs.
- Manage requirements through capturing, tracing, and analyzing.
- Analyze aircraft wiring to understand the system and aircraft effect for loss of wire function.
- Assess aircraft compartment zones for hazards such as fire, fuel, and smoke due to ignition sources.
- Assess the impact to the aircraft from loss of components due to an engine blade failure.
- Select appropriate methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to resolve complex engineering issues.
- Act as a recognized authority and be consulted extensively by associates and others.
- Anticipate and resolve complex issues creatively, developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities.
- Balance technical product, cost, and schedule considerations in problem solving.
- Work without appreciable direction, reviewing work from a long‑range perspective for desired results.
- Exercise latitude in determining technical objectives of assignments and make authoritative decisions and recommendations.
- Maintain current knowledge of developments in aircraft specialties and related fields to recommend innovations and improve quality and effectiveness of company products.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge and technical acumen of System Safety Engineering analysis techniques and processes, including but not limited to 14 CFR Part 25.1309, ARP
4754A, and ARP
4761. - Knowledge of aerodynamics, and typical systems and equipment designs associated with airplanes.
- Experience with allocation of aircraft functions to systems functions, classification of criticality assignments, and FDAL & IDAL Assignment Process.
- Experience in performing fault tree analysis, failure mode effect analysis, and common cause analysis.
- Experience with probability and reliability calculations and fault tree analysis software (CAFTA preferred).
- Familiarity and a working knowledge of Safety Requirements in DOORS or similar software.
- Familiarity in EWIS .1709 analysis.
- Familiarity in HIRF / Lightning Criticality Analysis.
- Familiarity in other particular risk assessments such as Engine Rotor Burst Analysis, APU Rotor Burst Analysis, Environmental & Zonal Analysis, Wheel Well Analysis.
- Advanced degree in engineering or related curriculum preferred (see Education section).
- University-level education in engineering or technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform essential functions.
- Minimum 10 years in specific technical discipline or 15 years broad engineering experience across several disciplines.
- Experience credit for related advanced degrees limited to 2 years for a Master’s and 4 years for a PhD.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English language.
Skills and Abilities
- CATIA/3D modeling.
- Technical writing.
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or a related technical curriculum applicable to the position or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions. One may also possess a Master’s or Ph.D. in applicable fields within limits of 2 or 4 years credit for advanced degrees.
Job position requires recognition as a technical specialist and the ability to develop standards, perform advanced safety analyses, and manage complex design requirements.
