About the Position:

Join the Stability and Control team within Flight Dynamics and Flight Sciences for a Spring 2027 internship! Our team is responsible for defining airplane stability and control requirements that drive the design and sizing of horizontal and vertical tail surfaces, flight control surfaces, and system architectures necessary to deliver exceptional flying and handling qualities. Day-to-day work centers on desktop simulations, pilot-in-the-loop simulations, and flight testing, encompassing both normal and abnormal operating conditions.

Given the multidisciplinary nature of the Flight Dynamics organization, interns may also contribute to simulation model development, support flight control law design activities, and participate in preliminary aircraft design initiatives. In addition, our team is undertaking significant upgrades to our analysis and engineering toolsets, enhancing our ability to perform studies, collect and analyze data, and make informed decisions throughout the aircraft development lifecycle.

Skills:
  • (Required) Strong MATLAB Coding Skills
  • (Desired) Exposure to aircraft conceptual, preliminary, or detailed design activities with an emphasis on control surface, control architecture, and empennage sizing.
  • (Desired) Experience in coding in languages other than MATLAB (Python/Num Py or C++)
  • (Desired) Familiarity or hands‑on experience with FUN3D, Vortex Lattice Methods (VLM), Tecplot for aerodynamic data visualization
  • (Desired) Demonstrated experience with wind tunnel testing and data reduction
  • (Desired) Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering or academic research environments
Hobbies / Interests:
  • Passion for airplanes and desire to understand more how they work, particularly how they are controlled / the flight dynamics aspects, including manned flight
  • Broad interests relating to airplanes, including aerodynamics, systems, avionics, loads/structures
  • Participation in clubs like AIAA, Design Build Fly, etc.
  • Interest in working with pilots and being involved in lab testing and simulation development
  • Airplane Handling Qualities
  • RC Airplanes/Drones (especially aerodynamic / flight dynamic perspective), robotics, microprocessors, Arduinos
  • Private pilot license, or experience with piloted flight

  • (Desired) Controls, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
