This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the day-to-day activities of the water treatment laboratory.

Overview

The Water Treatment Laboratory Supervisor leads a team of laboratory professionals to ensure safe, accurate, and compliant water testing operations. This role combines technical expertise, leadership, and quality assurance oversight to support the City's mission of delivering clean, safe, and reliable water to the community. The supervisor ensures laboratory operations meet EPA and EPD standards, fosters a culture of continuous improvement, and serves as a key resource for staff development, process optimization, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns, and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Serves as coordinator for the laboratory's quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) program.
  • Supervises the work of laboratory personnel to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and approved EPA requirements.
  • Supervises the work of department personnel to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and approved EPA methods.
  • Monitors quality control procedures; conducts quality control checks of data generated.
  • Audits data generated by laboratory personnel; prepares and submits monthly and yearly EPA and EPD reports.
  • Prepares reagents for analysis.
  • Prepares monthly QA/QC reports to document instrument calibration, data validation, and nonconformance.
  • Manages the automated sample program in the information management system.
  • Maintains laboratory safety equipment and activity logs.
  • Maintain laboratory records system, including managing laboratory's auto sample programming in the LIMS, filing hard copy data, monitoring sample custody to include tracking sample receipt logbooks and sample COCs. Tracks reagent prep logs and other logs.
  • Reviews technicians' computer data entries.
  • Conducts in-house sample audits using known and unknown substances.
  • Inspects instruments and equipment to ensure safe operating conditions; calibrates equipment and instruments; troubleshoots problems; and maintains the maintenance and calibration log.
  • Maintains laboratory inventory; orders supplies and chemicals as needed; inspects incoming shipments to ensure they are complete and not damaged.
  • Conducts special baseline analysis on treatment plants, special investigative samples, septic haulers, and lift stations monitoring; monitors sample custody and documentation.
  • Prepares samples for shipment to contract laboratories; delivers samples as needed.
  • Monitors and maintains reverse osmosis and de-mineralized water used for the preparation of standards, reagents, and dilutions.
  • Communicates to the Chemist any issues affecting permit compliance or the needs of the lab. Communicates to plant personnel sample results for process control.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, with four years of laboratory work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience—some supervisory experience preferred.

Must possess Georgia Water Laboratory Analyst Certification or obtain certification within sixteen (16) months of employment.

A valid driver's license is desired.

Additional Requirements

Background investigation, including supervised drug screen, post offer/pre-employment medical screen, and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

  • Skill in operating standard and specialized laboratory tools, equipment, meters, and instruments.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
