Responsibilities
  • Oversees and directs maintenance crews involved in tree care operations including tree planting, pruning and removal.
  • Assigns and monitors work, ensures safety procedures and standards are followed, and provides training on equipment use and job expectations.
  • Evaluates employee performance and resolves personnel concerns.
  • Conducts site inspections to verify work quality and regulatory adherence.
  • Monitors and maintains records related to timekeeping, payroll, drug testing, safety incidents, inspections, and maintenance logs.
  • Performs tree inspections to evaluate tree health and condition and schedule any necessary work.
  • Responds to and investigates incidents involving traffic, property damage or personal injury involving trees.
  • Responds to after‑hours emergencies and supervises on‑call staff as needed.
Requirements
  • Minimum:
    High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus three (3) years of related experience or equivalent education, training and experience.
  • Certified arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture.
  • Valid state commercial driver’s license with acceptable driving history.
Additional Requirements

Background investigation, supervised drug screen, post‑offer/pre‑employment medical screen, and verification of education, certifications, and licenses required prior to employment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of arboriculture industry safety standards, including ANSI Z133.
  • Knowledge of national standards for arboricultural practices including ANSI A300.
  • Knowledge of best management practices for planting, pruning, and removing trees.
  • Knowledge of tree and soil biology, and forest pest management.
  • Ability to identify tree species, forest pests and assess potential tree hazards.
  • Skill in the use of computers and other standard office equipment.
  • Skill in organization and interpersonal relations.
Minimum Standards

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director. The supervisor spot‑checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include industry standards; local, state, and environmental regulations; city policies and procedures; and safety policies and practices. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY:
The work consists of varied administrative, supervisory, and technical maintenance duties. Requires the application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents, and moderate analytic ability in adapting standard methods to fit facts and conditions. The need to perform multiple tasks at the same time contributes to the complexity of the position. SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to supervise tree care activities. Daily actions or services affect individual clients/citizens; activity has a moderate impact on specific cases in the service area. PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Outside and inside contacts to carry out organization programs or occasional contacts with officials at higher levels on matters requiring cooperation, explanation, and persuasion, or work requiring enforcement of laws, ordinances, policies, and procedures. Contacts are typically with co‑workers, department heads, other city employees, elected and appointed officials, state and federal agency representatives, engineers, consultants, architects, business owners, developers, vendors, and members of the general public.
