Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Engineering supplemented with two years of experience performing laboratory tests, including collecting and gathering samples for environmental compliance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Specific License or Certification

Must possess and maintain a valid Water Laboratory Analyst Certification and/or Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certification within one (1) year of employment as issued by the State of Georgia. Type of Certification to be determined by area of assignment. Valid State of Georgia Driver's License or proof of mobility equivalent may be requested.

Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Examination

The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience, accomplished by analysis of the application. Application must document that the applicant possesses the minimum knowledge, skills, education and experience as listed to be rated as qualified. If selected, an official accredited college transcript is required at time of employment for all degrees/course work used to qualify for this position.

Purpose

of Classification

To monitor the north Fulton water distribution system and to ensure that water samples in streams, lakes, rivers, where a major sewer has spilled are collected and analyzed in accordance with laws, rules and regulations established by federal, state and A2LA accreditation authorities.

Essential Functions
  • Collect and perform field and laboratory analysis on drinking water samples and transport samples back to the lab.
  • Perform field analysis such as pH, chlorine, temperature, and turbidity.
  • Conduct QC checks and calibration checks on pH meters, colorimeters and torque meters prior to use.
  • Prepare appropriate forms and chain of custody records.
  • Coordinate sampling and field testing with engineers, county inspectors, and contractors during new water line installations.
  • Calibrate meters and perform quality control and assurance checks on equipment. Conduct QC checks on chlorine, turbidity meters, fluoride, and pH.
  • Calibrate meters with certified pH buffers and document in pH calibration book.
  • Check performance of instruments with secondary gel standards. Perform quarterly in‑house calibration of turbidity meters using certified formazin standards, blind QA samples, and two proficiency double‑blind samples for A2LA requirements.
  • Perform routine maintenance on all equipment, preventive maintenance of pH meters, electrodes, dissolved oxygen probes and colorimeters. Record maintenance in equipment maintenance book.
  • Initiate Trouble Alert Sheets on nonconformance and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions in coordination with manufacturer’s support.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports including field sampling sheets, chain of custody for daily sampling events, inventory when new lab supplies arrive.
  • Generate and maintain vehicle maintenance records and lead monthly safety meetings, generating training records.
  • Enter data into computer using charts and graphs, enter QC data into Excel spreadsheets, daily production count, control charts for chlorine and turbidity. Enter miscellaneous data into Lab Works LIMS.
  • Use GPS, AERO Atlas, and Fulton County GIS to identify geographical area, plan routes and coordinate spill sites.
