Job SummaryThe Sergeant position is responsible for supervising police and security personnel of the shift. The Police Sergeant directs officers in policing and assists leadership in ensuring a safe campus environment. This position assigns duties to subordinates, directs, monitors, and evaluates the work of shift officers and conducts patrols, assists in investigations, and reviews reports.
Responsibilities- Coordination of CLERY Act Compliance
- Review, approve, and correct daily reports
- Disseminate information to officers and staff
- Identify and facilitate training for officers
- Attend meetings and training
- Stay up-to-date with current training trends and case law
- Conduct quarter master duties and assign equipment and uniforms to all police department personnel
- Act as the evidence custodian ensuring state law compliance
- Assume duties as acting division supervisor or operational management in the absence of senior leadership
- Speak at student organization and orientation workshops
- Assist with criminal investigations and execute search & arrest warrants
- Assist in managing 911 operations and ensure GCIC compliance
- Oversee university camera system and provide support for judicial and investigative purposes
- Serve as liaison for training, coordinate firearms training, and provide legal updates on use of force
- Respond to any emergency situations
- Perform administrative duties including employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, roll call, and monthly reports
- Respond to complaints, provide direction to officers on scene, and evaluate decisions
- Be available for recall in emergency situations
- Ensure a safe environment for the Savannah State community
- Supervise personnel on assigned shift to assure adherence to department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Arrest violators as necessary
- Assign duties to subordinates
- Perform regular inspections, including full vehicle inspections and equipment checks
- Communicate information from senior officers
- Respond to calls for assistance from officers
- May be required to perform job-related duties beyond those specifically delineated in this position
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- At least 5 years of law enforcement experience
- Georgia POST certification or capacity to obtain certification within six months of hire
- Excellent customer service skills
- High professional standards
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
- Valid driver's license in good standing
- Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws, university policies, and department procedures
- Knowledge of law enforcement administration principles, fiscal management, budgeting, program planning, and administration
- Knowledge of employee supervision and personnel management, including training, mentoring, and disciplining
- Knowledge of traffic investigation techniques and procedures
- Knowledge of university buildings and surrounding area
- Knowledge of first-aid and CPR techniques
- Knowledge of court system and judicial procedures
- Skilled in operating police vehicles, firearms, emergency equipment, and specialized law enforcement equipment
- Skilled in interrogation and interviewing techniques
- Skilled in restraining persons without causing physical harm
- Skilled in using computers for word processing
- Ability to meet current requirements of the Georgia Mandate Law Enforcement Training Act and Peace Officer Standards and Training Act
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action based on hazards and circumstances
- Ability to carry duty belt, weapons, evidence equipment, and lift or carry heavy objects or individuals in rescue efforts
- Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others
- Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member
- The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping
- Employee must occasionally lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguish between shades of color, and use the physical force necessary to arrest and restrain persons
- Work performed indoors, in a vehicle, or outside
- Employee exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, infectious or contagious diseases, life‑threatening situations, and inclement weather
