General

Summary:

The REACH School Safety Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. The School Safety Officer supports campus safety operations by monitoring school grounds, enforcing safety procedures, responding to incidents, assisting with emergency preparedness, and building positive relationships with students and staff. The School Safety Officer is a civilian non-armed employee that receives additional training and equipment enabling them to help maintain a safe environment for students, staff, families and visitors.

  • Ensures that visitors are directed to front office personnel for appropriate directions.
  • Maintains a smooth flow of entry traffic while ensuring safety and security is not compromised.
  • Detects and confiscates weapons and/or contraband.
  • Remains vigilant for suspicious activity or emergency situations.
  • Maintains a professional appearance in issued uniform and equipment.
  • Maintains confidentiality in the organizational environment as required.
  • Responsible for maintaining high visibility on school grounds to maintain safety of students and staff.
  • Conforms to prescribed safety standards.
  • Conducts internal and external school threat assessments.
  • Use verbal de‑escalation techniques learned during provided training when encountering aggressive or uncooperative individuals.
  • Enforces school rules and board policies.
  • Prepares and completes various forms, reports and documents for submission.
  • Performs other duties as necessary for the safe and effective operation of the school.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Ability to prepare accurate and concise written reports.
  • Maintain security of confidential materials.
  • Demonstrate ability to judge when to act independently and when to refer situations to supervisor.
  • Work cooperatively with employees, students, parents, and public.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and composed during stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to work with principals, administrators and other school personnel regarding juveniles.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and emergency personnel.
  • Strong observation skills with the ability to identify potential safety concerns and respond appropriately.

Education and Experience:

  • Preferred three years of experience as a public or private safety, security, military, law enforcement or relevant work experience.
  • At least one year of experience as a public or private safety, security, military, law enforcement or relevant work experience evidenced of successful programs working with students.
  • A GED or standard high school diploma from a GaDOE-approved and accredited institution is required.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Occasional heavy lifting of up to 25 pounds.
  • Work requires some physical activities, including extended periods of standing, sitting, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping.
