School Resource Officer

This position directs, plans, supervises, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of the School Resource Officer and is responsible for Zones/Beats to ensure high visibility police presence on school property; responsible to prevent and respond to crimes against district property, students and personnel. This position is also responsible for the supervision of school crossing guards across the district; coordinating safe routes to school for walking students in collaboration with City/County engineers and local law enforcement;

responsible for interviewing, selection, training and retention of workforce. This position may have responsibilities for a focused area and may be assigned to any shift as needed.

Education Level: A GED or a standard high school diploma from a GaDOE-approved and accredited institution is required.

Preferred:
College coursework or degree in criminal justice

Experience, Skill, and Certification:

  • Certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (POST) as a police officer
  • Minimum of three years' experience as a law enforcement officer
  • Police academy or training in specific areas of security procedures and investigation
  • Ability to operate emergency equipment, weapons, and motor vehicles
  • Ability to maintain crowd control
  • Ability to work rapidly and accurately with names, codes and symbols
  • Ability to prepare and approve accurate and concise written reports
  • Ability to maintain security of confidential materials
  • Ability to judge when to act independently and when to refer situations to supervisor
  • Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, parents, and public
  • Knowledge of basic law to include criminal and civil statutes
  • Knowledge of police procedures, Criminal Code of Georgia, Juvenile Court Code, and Basic Law Enforcement
  • Ability to work with principals, administrators and other school personnel with regard to juvenile or adult offense and to arbitrate for restitution
  • Ability to supervise approximately sixty locations staffed with trained personnel to provide for the safe crossing of students at designated locations
  • Ability to work flexible schedules to include nights and weekends

Preferred

  • Previous experience as a School Resource Officer

Essential Duties:

  • Enforces regulations and procedures in order to assure the safety of district property, personnel, and students.
  • Responds to crimes, accidents and emergency situations.
  • Conforms to prescribed safety standards.
  • Establishes Incident Command during Critical incidents until a higher-ranking person assumes Command.
  • Coordinates security and safety efforts with school administrators and other administrative staff.
  • Conducts internal affairs investigations and investigations of citizen complaints as necessary.
  • Coordinates work schedule for assigned workgroup and assists School Resource Officers with elevated issues. Schedules staff as needed for crime trends and issues, special events and off-duty work.
  • Oversees payroll and completion of time sheets for submission.
  • Provides orientation to new School Resource Officers for daily activities.
  • Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises and reviews work of School Resource Officers
  • May supervise non-sworn staff.
  • Provides training, guidance and counseling to assigned personnel.
  • Complete employee evaluations and reviews as required.
  • Provides administrative support to management.
  • Responsible for special programs, projects and department wide functions/activities.
  • Prepares Incident Action Plans.
  • Prepares, processes, reviews, approves, and maintains a variety of written reports and records.
  • Coordinates police activities with other units and/or other law enforcement agencies
  • Analyzes crime trends and service patterns and develop effective responses. Identifies problems and develops solutions.
  • Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives. Implement approved policies and procedures.
  • Speaks before groups and represents the Campus Police at meetings and conferences as directed/approved.
  • Attend meetings and participate in community outreach initiatives.
  • May be required to work events such as sporting events, meetings, concerts, graduations, and/or any other related type of activities after and beyond normal working hours.
  • Participate in the selection of police and school safety staff; identify training deficiencies and provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; conduct personnel investigations; monitor staff attendance, and overall supervision of staff.
  • Performs all duties of a School Resource Officer as necessary
