Maintenance Worker, General Labor, Construction Labor ​/ Trades

Overview

This position reports to a Supervisor, a Foreman, or a Crew Leader. The incumbent is responsible for repairing roads, installing signs, maintaining right‑of‑ways, and constructing and maintaining drainage systems in the County.

Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather, exposing the incumbent to noise, dirt, dust, and hazardous machinery.

Physical demands include sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and occasionally lifting objects weighing more than 50 pounds. The incumbent must also be able to distinguish varying shades of color.

Basic literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to completion of high school are required. No prior experience is required for basic tasks.

Possession of a valid driver’s license for the class of vehicles or equipment operated, and ability to pass the Georgia D.O.T. Flagging Procedures Course, is required. A High School Diploma or G.E.D. must be obtained within the first six months of employment.

• Repairs asphalt roads including edging, water cuts, and potholes.
• Install road signs including replacing and positioning street markers.
• Install and maintain drainage ditches, including placement of rip‑rap and removal of obstructions from drainage culverts and storm drains.
• Remove overgrowth obstructing view of road signs and clear underbrush from shoulders of roads, including spraying chemicals around mail boxes to eliminate weeds.
• Repairs and maintains driveways.
• Pours cement used in curving, traps, and patching cracks.
• Drives and performs general maintenance on trucks used in delivering materials.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Skill in using equipment such as a chain saw, auger and jack hammer.
• Skill in operating various equipment such as a truck and backhoe.

Possession of a valid driver’s license for the class of vehicles or equipment operated. Possession of or ability to pass the Georgia D.O.T. Flagging Procedures Course. Possession of or ability to obtain a High School Diploma or G.E.D. within the first six months of employment is required.

A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
