This position operates medium equipment for the assigned department.
- Maintains assigned equipment; completes minor repairs; washes and greases equipment.
- Perform pre-trip inspection.
- Transports equipment to job sites.
- Ensures that work sites are compliant with safety guidelines.
- Informs surrounding residents of work in progress.
- Operates jackhammer, backhoe, and hand tools to excavate water lines.
- Operates the tapping machine.
- Digs trenches, cuts streets, sidewalks, and driveways.
- Measures and cuts tubing and wire.
- Excavates and cleans meter boxes.
- Repairs lines and main breaks.
- Assists in the installation, repair, and maintenance of fire hydrants
- Operates backhoe, mini excavator, crew trucks, and concrete saws.
- Transports equipment to job sites.
- Performs or assists with street construction and maintenance activities.
- Maintains rights-of-way, streets, and sidewalks.
- Maintains, inspects, and operates various hand and power tools and small equipment, and asphalt and cement demolition and finishing equipment.
- Sets up traffic control devices around work sites.
- Loads construction debris onto trucks.
- Moves dirt, gravel, rock, sand, and other heavy materials.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requires a High School Diploma or GED equivalent, with two years of medium equipment operation and maintenance experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
- Knowledge of water infrastructure repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- Skill in the operation of work-related equipment, including tractors, flatbed trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, trimmers, blowers, and front-end loaders.
- Skill in performing maintenance checks of equipment.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Work is performed under the close supervision of the Supervisor. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include city and department policies. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY:
The work consists of related duties connected to operating equipment to maintain city parks and facilities. Regular and repetitive tasks, processes, or operations requiring the selection and execution of actions based on defined procedures. Malfunctioning equipment and inclement weather contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to operate equipment to maintain city parks and facilities. Supportive, informational, recording, or other services to assist others in producing correct and effective results; minor consequences. Successful performance helps ensure the maintenance and beautification of city property.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Regular contact within the department, periodic contact with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public. Contacts are typically with co-workers and other city employees.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is typically performed outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. One or more disagreeable elements (dust, heat, fumes, cold, noise, vibration, or wetness) are regularly present and objectionable, or continuing exposure to work situations that could result in incapacitating accidents or periodic exposure to situations involving hazards that could result in total disability, critical illness, or loss of life.
