Refrigeration Mechanic

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing refrigeration units on tractor trailers used for the distribution of cold products. You will perform preventive maintenance, diagnose issues, and complete repairs on cold storage units and related HVAC systems, ensuring reliable and efficient operation of the equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance (PM) on refrigeration units installed on tractor trailers and cold storage units.
  • Diagnose and repair issues with trailer-mounted refrigeration systems, including mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration components.
  • Work on HVAC units and vehicle air conditioning systems to ensure proper cooling performance.
  • Use electrical knowledge to troubleshoot wiring, components, and control systems related to refrigeration and HVAC equipment.
  • Read and interpret schematics and technical diagrams to identify faults and complete accurate repairs.
  • Inspect diesel engines associated with refrigeration units and perform basic troubleshooting and repairs as needed.
  • Use appropriate hand tools and provided specialty tools to perform maintenance and repair tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Document work performed, including maintenance activities, repairs, and parts used, in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Rotate Saturday shifts as scheduled to support customer and operational needs.
  • Follow safety procedures and best practices while working in an outdoor shop environment in varying weather conditions.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on experience working with refrigeration systems, particularly cold storage units on trailers or similar equipment.
  • Experience with HVAC units and vehicle air conditioning systems.
  • Electrical experience related to HVAC, refrigeration equipment, and control systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, diesel, and refrigeration issues effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and technical diagrams.
  • General mechanical knowledge sufficient to perform maintenance and repairs on refrigeration and related systems.
  • Experience working with diesel engines in the context of refrigeration or similar equipment.
  • Capability to work full-time hours Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and rotate Saturday shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in an outdoor shop environment with varying temperatures.
Additional

Skills & Qualifications
  • Previous experience working on Thermo King or similar trailer refrigeration units is highly preferred and may qualify for higher pay.
  • Basic hand tools such as wrenches, sockets, ratchets, and hand drills are required.
  • Willingness to use and care for specialty tools provided for working on refrigeration units.
  • Interest in pursuing further training and certifications related to trailer refrigeration systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail when diagnosing and repairing equipment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a busy service environment.

Environment

You will work primarily in an outdoor shop environment where conditions can be hot or cold depending on the season. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with rotating Saturday shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The role involves hands-on work with refrigeration systems, HVAC units, diesel-driven equipment, and electrical components, using a combination of your own basic hand tools and specialty tools provided by the company.
