Equipment Technician

Under the supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Foreman, the Equipment Technician inspects, services, and repairs electrical, electronic, mechanical, structural, and hydraulic systems for ship to shore cranes, rail mounted gantry cranes, rubber-tired gantry cranes, shuttle trucks, and associated equipment. Upholds the values of the GPA to promote Safety, Integrity, Respect, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Promotes a safe work environment by participating in safety initiatives and reporting unsafe conditions and behaviors.

Job Duties:

  • Perform emergency response to operations requests for immediate repair of disabled equipment. Identifies problem and implements necessary corrective action to repair cranes or associated equipment. Operate cranes/heavy equipment as necessary for repairs.
  • Inspect, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on electrical, electronic, mechanical, structural, and hydraulic systems. To include: DC and AC circuits, motors, drive systems, generators, alternators, programmable logic controllers, limit switches, lights, resistor banks, wiring and alarm systems, fiber-optic cables, load cell systems, hydraulic systems, gear reducers, fans, bearings, clutches, wheels, brakes, drums, wire ropes, and diesel engines.
  • Reads and understands electrical, electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic drawings and schematics, makes necessary changes to schematics and wiring diagrams to reflect as-built or as-modified conditions.
  • Performs set-up, parameter download, and calibration of AC drive systems per original equipment manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical, electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems on the cranes.
  • Perform millwright tasks, such as leveling, aligning, and installing machinery, aligning electric motors and installing couplings. Repair/rebuild mechanical drive systems such as gear boxes, brakes, air, hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Replace wire ropes.
  • Troubleshoot, repair or rebuild diesel engines.
  • Install conduit and wiring as necessary for installation of equipment modifications or for new equipment installations.
  • Perform miscellaneous burning, welding, and other assigned tasks.
  • Assists Crane Operations personnel when necessary.
  • Plans, selects, and orders materials, tools, and equipment necessary for jobs.
  • Willing and able to repair equipment to eliminate the cause of downtime and its recurrence. Consult with supervisor and set-up preventive maintenance procedures. Report any equipment which requires repair or maintenance to the immediate supervisor.
  • Assist in the training of other employees on the finer points of electrical and mechanical theories and practices requiring the highest skill and knowledge.
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and environmentally acceptable working environment.

Job Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to work well with other employees necessary.
  • Thorough understanding of, and familiar with necessary techniques to troubleshoot, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic systems.
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to read electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic diagrams required.
  • Thorough knowledge of industrial diagrams and their symbols and meanings necessary.
  • Ability to use a systematic troubleshooting technique that will quickly isolate and find troubles in cables, wiring, relays, regulators, power supplies, AC drive systems, and brake systems as necessary.
  • Proficient in the use of hand tools, welding equipment, forklifts, and electrical diagnostic tools.
  • Vision requirements:
    Visual acuity of 20/40 with or without corrective lenses for each eye, minimum depth perception of 6/9, and minimum peripheral vision of 70 degrees for each eye.
  • The ability to interact and communicate effectively and professionally with the GPA staff on all levels of administration including immediate supervisor, management and co-workers required.
  • This position requires that the individual is able to lift up to 50 lbs., and maneuver large parts. Must climb and work at high elevations up to 330 ft.

Experience

  • Experience in industrial maintenance. Required
  • Experience on container cranes Preferred
  • Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude Required
  • Extensive knowledge of solid-state troubleshooting techniques Preferred

Education

  • Required High School Diploma Or equivalent
  • Preferred Certified vocational technical school training, or extensive industrial experience in electrical or mechanical systems
  • Preferred Electrical/electronic technology associate or engineering degree

Licenses & Certifications

  • TWIC
    - Transportation Worker Identification Credential Required
  • Driver's License
    - Valid state driver's license Required
