Dispatchers are available to answer any questions from the drivers and help troubleshoot problems that arise.
Duties and responsibilities include keeping track of the progress that drivers make during their day, using a transportation management system to track the driver's progress, checking the drivers' in and out time and transferring these records into a company's files, handling any request or issue brought forward by the customers, processing payroll, reporting accidents, keeping driver's logs, communicating with safety, aiding in driver recruitment and retention, managing hours of service for drivers, working on a schedule that includes night shifts, and having strong communication skills to give clear instructions to drivers.
They must also be able to work under pressure and multitask, stay organized, and prioritize the order of calls.
Transportation dispatchers need to have at least a high school degree or its equivalent. Most dispatchers begin their career as drivers, where they learn about rules related to driving and the company's operations. The company also provides on-the-job training. Dispatchers need to be adaptable to lengthy and strenuous working hours; they generally work a 50-hour week and spend long periods sitting at their desk.
