Full-Time Dispatcher
Are you someone who can stay calm under pressure, communicate clearly, and make quick decisions when it matters most? The Town of Scarborough is looking for a Full-Time Dispatcher to join our 24/7 9-1-1 Communications Center. This is a fast-paced position where every call is different. Dispatchers answer emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls, communicate with police and fire personnel by radio, and provide emergency medical and fire instructions to callers when needed.
The position also involves entering and maintaining information in local, state, and national systems, including records related to stolen property, vehicles, firearms, missing persons, and wanted persons. Other related duties may be assigned. Because our Communications Center operates around the clock, applicants must be available to work 10-hour shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. The specific schedule will be determined after required training is completed.
What We're Looking For Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be comfortable working with advanced computer-aided dispatch technology. Successful candidates will be able to:
Receive and communicate information accurately and quickly Remain calm, focused, and effective during stressful or emergency situations Communicate professionally with the public and emergency personnel Listen carefully and retain important information Manage multiple tasks at the same time Type at least 40 words per minute Candidates must successfully complete a job suitability assessment and a thorough background investigation, including psychological and polygraph examinations.
Prior 9-1-1, Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), or Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) certification is preferred. Familiarity with Tyler Enterprise Public Safety CAD is also a plus. The Town of Scarborough will provide the training necessary to meet all state-mandated certification requirements.
Compensation & Benefits This is a union, non-exempt position with a schedule of four consecutive 10-hour shifts followed by three consecutive days off.
