Maine Medical Center (MMC) in Portland, Maine is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Advanced Practice Provider (APP)—Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Physician Associate (PA)—to join the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) under the leadership of the CICU and Cardiovascular Service Line (CVSL). This role supports the care of critically ill cardiac and cardiothoracic patients in a high-acuity, academic, tertiary-care environment.
ClinicalResponsibilities
- Provide comprehensive care for critically ill patients with advanced cardiovascular disease, including:
- Acute coronary syndromes
- Cardiogenic shock
- Advanced heart failure
- Unstable arrhythmias
- Mechanical circulatory support (e.g., IABP, Impella, etc)
- Perform independent patient assessments, formulate diagnoses, and implement evidence-based treatment plans under the supervision of a cardiology attending and consultation from cardiovascular critical care attendings
- Independently and collaboratively manage acute and chronic cardiac conditions in the ICU setting
- Perform and assist with procedures as credentialed (e.g., arterial lines, central venous access, pulmonary artery catheters, chest tube management)
- Interpret hemodynamic data, laboratory results, cardiac imaging, and telemetry
- Collaborate closely with cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, critical care, anesthesia, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health teams
- Participate in daily multidisciplinary rounds and care coordination
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients and families regarding plan of care and prognosis
- Ensure safe transitions of care across the continuum (ICU, step-down, discharges)
- Enhance ICU best practice adherence by the team (e.g. residents and interns)
- Practice in alignment with Maine Medical Center policies, quality standards, and evidence-based guidelines
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety efforts, and clinical pathway development
- Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff, trainees, and new APPs
- Engage in professional development, continuing education, and maintenance of certification
- Support the academic mission of MMC, including participation in teaching and scholarly activities as appropriate
- Participate in clinical research and quality initiatives under the director of the Medical leader of the CICU
- Work under the direction and leadership of the CICU Director andCSVL
- Contribute to clinical program development and optimization of CICU care delivery models
- Participate in APP governance, operations, scheduling, and service-line initiatives
- Collaborate with physician and APP leadership to enhance team-based care and operational efficiency
- Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant/Associate or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program
- Eligible for or currently licensed to practice in the State of Maine
- Current BLS and ACLS certification
- Ability to obtain full clinical privileges and credentialing at Maine Medical Center
- 2–5 years of critical care OR cardiology experience
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to function in a high-acuity ICU environment
