OverviewSWCA Environmental Consultants is an employee‑owned environmental consulting firm specializing in natural and cultural resource management, environmental planning, and regulatory compliance. We are growing a team in Scarborough, ME and seek a Project Level Environmental Scientist.
Responsibilities- Develop project management and technical lead skills on environmental and water resource projects.
- Manage tasks related to wetland science and threatened/endangered species projects.
- Oversee and direct all aspects of environmental permitting related to Clean Water Act Sections 401, 402, 404, U.S. Endangered Species Act, and other state & local regulations.
- Collaborate with natural and cultural resources specialists to fulfill planning and permitting needs.
- Responsible for multi‑disciplinary scope of work and budget development, tracking scopes and budgets during execution.
- Coordinate with agencies and clients regarding wetland, rare species, stormwater, compliance monitoring, building relationships with stakeholders.
- Prepare resource inventory reports, permitting support, and other documents.
- Organize, review, and transfer field data; write technical reports and permit applications for CWA, floodplain management, etc.
- Coordinate with other SWCA scientists for quality assurance of scope of work and project approach.
- Ensure team safety, develop safety plans, anticipate potential hazards.
- Act as task manager, oversee, direct field activities, manage small to mid‑sized projects.
- Bachelor’s degree in Wetland Science, Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field.
- Minimum 3 years progressively responsible experience in natural resources.
- Experience leading wetland delineations, rare species investigations, construction monitoring, related tasks.
- Experience with federal, state, and local environmental laws in the northeast U.S.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- At least 1 year of natural resources project management experience, including budgets, scopes of work, and schedules.
- 5 years progressively responsible experience in natural resources.
- Experience on linear projects, including natural gas clients.
- Professional certifications such as PWS, CWB, CERP, NHCWS, CESSWI, Registered Soil Scientist, CE, or similar.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel frequently, including at short notice, extended periods, nights, weekends.
- Must pass a motor vehicle background screening.
- Available to access projects within the geographic area.
- Ability to work long hours in harsh conditions.
Assistant Project Environmental Scientist: $27.30 – $35.62 hourly.
Associate Project Environmental Scientist: $64,896.00 – $83,283.20 annually.
Project Environmental Scientist: $71,385.60 – $91,936.00 annually.
