Civil Highway Engineer/ Railroad Specialist
Apply for the Civil Highway Engineer/Railroad Specialist role at GFT and contribute to our transportation team in Schaumburg, IL. This full‑time position (40 hours/week) follows a hybrid work model requiring regular attendance at our Schaumburg office.

What You’ll Be Challenged To Do- Perform roadway plan drawings, quantities, geometric design, pavement marking/signing, drainage design, traffic studies, traffic signal design, project reports, specifications, cost estimates, and roadway lighting.
- Engage in public involvement, project documentation, and coordination with multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Use Open Roads and Microsoft Office along with other design software to complete tasks independently under team leadership.
- Analyze information to perform routine design tasks and make decisions independently on engineering problems and methods.
- Ensure accuracy of engineering design and plan quality presentations, thoroughness, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
- Review design options and document findings, managing workload and any changes in project schedule or scope.
- Minimum 5 years of related, in‑field experience, including work directly or as a consultant for the Illinois Tollway, DOTs, or local transportation agencies on federally funded projects.
- Professional Engineering (P.E.) license for the state of Illinois.
- Strong technical, verbal, and written communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment on multi‑disciplinary projects.
- Preferred experience in railroad coordination and inspection of roadway/railroad work, and in highway, drainage, construction, track, traffic signal, or lighting.
- Illinois driver’s license.
The salary range for this role is $76,000 – $111,000, dependent upon experience and geographic location.
