Job Description
The VITAS Home Health Aide (HHA) is a non-exempt employee trained to provide personal care and services to hospice patients, supporting the care provided by family members or other caregivers. Salary Range: $20 - $24 / Hour
Assigned Job Responsibilities
- Performs personal care activities as outlined in a written assignment, including assisting with hygiene, meal preparation, ambulation, and certain treatments under supervision.
- Reads and records vital signs such as temperature, pulse, and respiration.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintains a safe environment, promotes mental alertness, provides emotional support, and reports patient changes to the nurse.
- Teaches basic personal care to caregivers, practices infection control, and documents care activities.
- Completes at least 12 hours of in-service training annually and performs other assigned tasks.
Restrictions
- Cannot perform sterile dressings, irrigations, catheterizations, administer medications, or care for tracheotomy tubes, among other restrictions.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Meets personnel qualifications per federal regulations and has completed 75 hours of training with a successful competency evaluation.
State Certification
Certification requirements vary by state, including CNA, HHA, or equivalent credentials, depending on location.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to read, write, follow directions, and travel as needed. Must have a telephone in the home.
Physical Demands
Requires lifting, transferring patients, standing, walking, and visual acuity, with accommodations available for disabilities.
Reporting
- Reports directly to the VITAS Nurse and receives clinical direction from them.
