Simon & Schuster is seeking an Associate Editor to help manage the predominantly commercial fiction list at the Emily Bestler Books imprint. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful and meticulous editor, a strong communicator, and an enthusiastic reader with a sharp eye for compelling, marketable stories. This individual will maintain relationships with the imprint’s authors and agents and monitor the marketplace to stay informed about emerging voices and trends.

The Associate Editor will help support the Emily Bestler Books editorial and publishing process, from manuscript development through production and publication. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with 2-3 years of publishing experience who is ready to expand their industry relationships and take on greater responsibility within a dynamic commercial fiction program.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Preparing materials and supporting presentations for editorial and acquisition meetings.
  • Partnering with publicity, marketing, sales, and publishing teams to help package, position, and promote books.
  • Serving as the editorial liaison with production, design, art, managing editorial, sales, marketing, and publicity throughout the publishing process.
  • Reviewing submissions, tracking prospective projects, and staying informed about marketplace trends and competitive titles.
  • Handling manuscript assessments and select projects as needed.
  • Communicating effectively with authors and agents throughout all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition through publication.
  • Managing schedules, deadlines, and related editorial materials to help ensure projects remain on track.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience at a general trade publisher, including experience supporting the editorial and acquisitions process.
  • Existing relationships within the agent community, with an interest in continuing to expand those connections.
  • A strong understanding of the commercial fiction marketplace and emerging reader trends.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop productive relationships with authors, agents, and internal partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, establish priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Teams, and related business applications.
