Sports/Entertainment Writer, TV Insider

[Remote / New York, NY] | Contract | Thursday through Monday

Who we are. TV Insider is one of the most-read destinations for television and streaming coverage, and we are expanding our sports coverage. The beat is where sports meets entertainment: how and where to watch, streaming and rights news, announcer and broadcast news, sports docs, sports-adjacent reality, and the athletes and broadcasters who have become entertainment stars in their own right.

The TV angle, not game analysis.

What you would do. This is our weekend anchor, a contract role built around the Thursday through Monday week, the biggest days on the sports TV calendar. You would own those days, coming in with your own story ideas and taking them all the way through: reporting, writing, search optimization, and publishing, several stories a day. Most days that means rights and schedule news, announcer and booth changes, how to watch the big games, viral broadcast moments, entertaining rankings and lists, and sports docs and reality.

The celebrity side is a real part of the beat: when an athlete joins a reality show, a broadcaster lands a new gig, or a sports star's life off the field becomes the story everyone is watching, we cover it for what it means on screen. What we don't do is game coverage: no recaps, no play-by-play. The test is simple: does the story help viewers better understand the events they have witnessed on screen, or add to their viewing experience.

Who

you are:
  • You have a news reporter's metabolism and do your best work on a big news day, especially when something blows up in the middle of a Sunday broadcast.
  • You work without an assignment desk: you come up with the ideas, write clean copy, edit yourself, build the post, and publish.
  • You understand search: the questions readers actually type, the headline that wins, the answer in the first two sentences, and where-to-watch in every story.
  • You follow the business and the personalities of sports TV, the rights deals, the broadcast booths, the streaming exclusives, and the stars themselves, and you know which stories a TV audience cares about.
  • You want the Thursday through Monday schedule, because that is when this beat happens.
