Manager, Research and Development

The Integrated Genomics Operation (IGO) at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is seeking a Manager, Research and Development to lead the evaluation, development, and implementation of cutting-edge genomics technologies. IGO is a high‑throughput core facility that enables basic, clinical, and translational cancer research by providing world‑class genomic services and expertise to MSK investigators. The team generates more than 100TB of data annually across 40+ genomic applications, including next‑generation approaches such as single‑cell and spatial transcriptomics.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced molecular biologist to combine scientific innovation, people leadership, and operational excellence in support of MSK's mission to cure cancer.

Role Overview:

As the Manager, Research and Development, you will lead IGO's R&D group and play a critical role in bringing novel genomic assays from concept to scalable, high‑throughput production.

  • Leading and supervising a team of technicians focused on testing and developing new genomics technologies.
  • Designing, evaluating, and optimizing novel assays, including feasibility assessments and protocol development.
  • Maintaining detailed experimental records, technical documentation, and written summaries of research activities.
  • Identifying anomalies in experimental data and resolving root causes through systematic troubleshooting.
  • Partnering closely with IGO production teams to transition validated assays into efficient, sustainable, high‑throughput services.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including data analysts and scientific partners.
  • Mentoring team members, evaluating performance, and providing timely, constructive feedback.
  • Communicating scientific concepts clearly and effectively in lab meetings, cross‑functional forums, and institutional seminars.
  • Contributing creatively to problem‑solving while maintaining an appreciation for the operational and business aspects of a core facility.

Key

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral experience in an academic research environment
  • Hands‑on experience with experimental and computational genomics methodologies
  • Strong publication record in NGS assay development
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
