Pay: starting at $10.00 per hour and up based on experience.
The Dance Coach supports the Y by teaching and choreographing fun, safe classes that promote enjoyment of dance and movement for children, teens, and adults. The role builds community within the class, assists in membership development and retention, and creates a positive, inclusive learning environment.
Essential Functions- Lead energizing, safe, and educational dance classes that align with YMCA mission and goals.
- Provide appropriate supervision at all times.
- Create lesson plans tailored to participants’ ages and abilities, modifying as needed.
- Plan and develop choreography for recitals.
- Build authentic relationships with participants and parents, helping them connect with each other and the YMCA.
- Model welcoming, motivating, and affirming behaviors.
- Treat participants fairly to foster confidence and self‑esteem.
- Deliver high‑energy classes weekly and build excitement for dance.
- Celebrate participant achievements and progress toward personal or program goals.
- Communicate progress with parents/guardians as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate class attendance records, aiming for retention and growth.
- Conduct daily equipment checks and complete cleaning tasks.
- Obtain and maintain required certifications, complete staff training, and attend meetings.
- Participate in special events and support YMCA campaign initiatives.
- Accept additional assignments within the scope of the job description.
- Minimum age 15.
- At least 12 months of dance training experience; prior teaching experience preferred.
- Must obtain CPR/AED, First Aid, and New Leader Orientation certifications within 30 days of hire.
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem‑solving skills.
- Can communicate effectively with diverse groups from all social and economic backgrounds.
- Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, and manuals.
- Passion for learning, working with youth/families, and the sport of dance.
- Requires visual, auditory, and verbal communication abilities.
- High level of alertness, concentration, and initiative required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; occasionally bend or stoop.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance at all times.
- Physical strength and agility needed for duties such as carrying equipment.
- May involve bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
- Must respond quickly in emergency situations and demonstrate sound judgment.
