Methodist Hospital, part of SA Health, is seeking a dedicated Surgical ICU Registered Nurse to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team in San Antonio. As a key member of our Surgical Intensive Care Unit, you will provide high-acuity, evidence-based nursing care to post-operative and critically ill surgical patients, including those recovering from complex procedures such as cardiovascular, neurosurgical, trauma, and transplant surgeries.
Working within a supportive and inclusive culture that emphasizes teamwork, innovation, and dedication to patient care, you will collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, respiratory therapists, and other interdisciplinary team members to deliver safe, timely, and compassionate care.
In this role, you will perform comprehensive assessments, interpret hemodynamic and telemetry data, manage ventilators and other advanced life-support equipment, titrate high-risk IV medications and vasoactive drips, and implement individualized care plans in accordance with hospital policies and best-practice guidelines. You will monitor patients for subtle changes in condition, intervene promptly in emergencies, participate in codes and rapid response situations, and provide accurate, concise communication during handoffs and multidisciplinary rounds.
Your responsibilities will also include administering medications, managing central lines, arterial lines, surgical drains, and wound care, and ensuring strict adherence to infection prevention and patient safety protocols.
The Surgical ICU Registered Nurse will play a critical role in educating patients and their families about procedures, treatment plans, and post-operative expectations, offering emotional support during stressful and often life-changing events. You will document all aspects of care in the electronic health record with meticulous attention to detail, contribute to quality improvement initiatives, follow unit-based protocols for pain management, sedation, early mobility, and prevention of complications, and support a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
