The School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SVMBS) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) seeks applications for a Veterinary Pathologist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This is a 12-month (calendar year), tenure-track appointment providing diagnostic pathology service to the Veterinary Diagnostic Center (VDC) and teaching in the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM).
Apportionment: 80% clinical diagnostic service; 20% teaching. Located in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Veterinary Diagnostic Pathologist will contribute to the integrated extension, research, and teaching land-grant mission of the SVMBS and IANR, including supporting student recruitment and science literacy.
As appropriate, the incumbent will develop high-impact diagnostic and teaching programs in pathology; establish disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations; integrate with diagnostic, research, and educational activities; engage with stakeholders, agency, and industry partners to strengthen activities; obtain and leverage external and internal support (grants, fee revenue, etc.) for diagnostic, research, and teaching activities; mentor residents and graduate students; and publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
The incumbent will participate in scientific meetings and translate research into learner-centered products, including creating scholarly and high-impact learning programs and tools; identify learner needs and broader issues with national/international relevance; measure program impact and communicate results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media; and mentor colleagues through professional development, translational research, grants, and professional writing.
The primary duty is scholarly diagnostic pathology service in a rotating schedule to the VDC. The pathologist will review case submissions, conduct necropsies, perform histology, and other appropriate procedures to render diagnoses or professional opinions, with a written interpretative summary. The incumbent will report results in a concise, timely, and accurate manner to clientele of the VDC (referring veterinarians, animal owners, state and federal officials).
The incumbent will support the Nebraska VDC quality system and ensure compliance with the system as part of AA VLD L and/or other accrediting bodies and may serve as a faculty laboratory section supervisor. Field investigations may be performed to aid diagnosis. The incumbent will contribute to diagnostic service for basic and applied research projects and will consult with clientele on areas of expertise.
Scholarly inquiry into case materials and dissemination at meetings, in peer-reviewed publications, and to stakeholders is expected.

- Diagnostic and clinical services in veterinary medicine
- Publication of clinical research and scholarship (studies, clinical trials, translational studies, case reports, diagnostic reports/summaries)
- Quality improvement within diagnostic services programs
- Mentorship and professional development for students, residents, and junior faculty in clinical programs
- Leadership roles in diagnostic laboratory programs or departmental committees
The pathologist will participate in the PPVM teaching program. The pathologist will average 0.20 FTE as determined by CASNR guidelines and will coordinate or participate in teaching first and second year veterinary pathology courses (VMED 642 or VMED 672). The incumbent will contribute to the VDC pathology training program by participating in education, instruction, and mentoring of residents, interns, and senior students.
Additional professional and undergraduate courses (e.g., histology and histopathology) may be available. Specific course assignments may change over time based on SVMBS needs.
