Building Systems Maintenance has four levels of Access/Security Technicians, and the level is determined by a candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and applicable licensure.
Access/Security Technician I, II, III and IV
:
All Access/Security Technicians assist with the installation, maintenance, alteration, addition, troubleshooting, and repair of low voltage electrical systems relative to building access and security equipment, interpret and use schematics and blueprint drawings to complete the installation and troubleshooting of electrical conduit systems, wiring and device termination in a commercial construction setting, assist with commissioning and documentation of building access control systems, maintain cleanliness and organization in assigned work areas, and complete work orders and utilize an electronic timekeeping system.
Access/Security Technician II
:
In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level II will work more independently and be given more complex duties such as ensuring compliance with regulations such as applicable building, electrical, and fire codes, and university and departmental standards and guidelines, and assisting with commissioning, programming, and documentation of building access control and security systems.
Access/Security Technician III : In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level III performs basic door and security systems programming, confirms scope, schedule, and budget requirements of work assignments and coordinates changes, tests and diagnoses circuits in low voltage electrical and building access controls wiring and equipment using testing devices, coordinates work and schedules, and trains, mentors, and verifies works of others.
Access/Security Technician IV: In addition to the duties and responsibilities above, a level IV installs and configures access control and security networking communication and alarm monitoring systems, assists leadership in project development, employee training, and safety coordination, communicates and coordinates with outside vendors and manufacturers relative to electrical equipment and systems, coordinates project changes and provide as-built documentation at the completion of the project, generate activity and outage notifications, and conduct access control and security estimating.

Additionally, a level 4 contributes to fostering a positive work environment, motivates and encourages staff to improve, supports leadership, and contributes to the development and implementation of departmental vision and goals.
