- To teach IDEA-eligible students individually, in small groups, or in collaboration with a general education teacher.
- To provide consultation, resource information, and materials development as may be needed to address the instructional objectives established for students through the IEP process.
- Assist students with instructional needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education
- Hold a valid Alabama Special Education credential
- Knowledge and skills in the use of SETSWeb, education assessment, consulting, coordination, interpretation and implementation of special education laws
- Effective interpersonal skills and flexibility in meeting new and/or changing conditions
- Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce and submit required reports and correspondence
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Secondary Special Education teachers should be knowledgeable of graduation requirements for all disability areas
- Punctuality and regular attendance
- Provide direct individual and small group instruction both within the classroom and on a “pull-out” basis as a supplement to the regular or other special class instructional program in which students may be enrolled.
- Consult, observe and recommend accommodations of regular program prior to referral to the Problem Solving Team (PST).
- Serve as case manager for IEP meetings at school site, as necessary.
- Assess individual student’s current level of functioning to determine needs.
- Progress monitor individual student’s current level of functioning for progress reports and IEP development.
- Select appropriate instructional tools and make necessary adaptations for the population.
- Score and interpret achievement tests for eligibility and re-evaluation purposes.
- Collect and review pertinent information from records, observations, parents and other members of the IEP team.
- Prepare a written report which summarizes assessment results, areas of need, and general observations in language understandable to all of the IEP team.
- Participate with IEP team in identifying goals and objectives appropriate to the age and level of the students.
- Develop IEPs for the purpose of meeting the individual needs of exceptional students.
- Write specific objectives developed from identified goals and assessment data.
- Maintain ongoing evaluation system for monitoring individual student’s program and progress (progress monitoring).
- Provide ongoing information to parent, student and school staff regarding student progress toward identified goals and objectives.
- Design and implement programs to meet individual student’s identified needs.
- Utilize and/or provide to staff appropriate materials to meet student’s identified needs.
- Adapt teaching methods based on student’s identified needs and sound principles of learning.
- Implement a program that provides continuity and consistency for students.
- Establish rapport, provide a suitable environment, and utilize strategies to promote student learning.
- Utilize strategies to promote in students a positive self-concept, self-awareness, self-discipline, responsibility and respect for others.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and utilize established curriculum.
- Maintain confidentiality concerning information related to students.
- Observe and comply with all timelines and requirements related to special education.
- Follow legal requirement regarding suspected child abuse reporting.
- Facilitate the student’s inclusion process by providing support services to the regular and/or special education classroom teacher.
- Collaborate with staff, parents, and agencies for the purpose of ensuring appropriate delivery of services and adherence to due process.
- Train school staff in skills needed for program instruction for identified students.
- Establish and maintain comprehensive student/program files as required.
