Special Education Teacher

This position reports to the Principal and Special Education Director. It is an exempt position with a term of 187 days, evaluated under State and/or Local Evaluation Protocol.

The job goal is to teach IDEA-eligible students individually, in small groups, or in collaboration with a general education teacher. Additionally, it involves providing consultation, resource information, and materials development to address the instructional objectives established for students through the IEP process. Assistance with instructional needs for students is also required.

Qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, holding a valid Alabama Special Education credential, knowledge and skills in the use of SETSWeb, education assessment, consulting, coordination, interpretation and implementation of special education laws, effective interpersonal skills, ability to use technology to communicate, plan and provide instruction, facilitate student learning, manage data, and produce required reports and correspondence, effective oral and written communication skills, knowledge of graduation requirements for all disability areas, punctuality and regular attendance.

Performance responsibilities include providing direct individual and small group instruction, consulting and observing to recommend accommodations, serving as case manager for IEP meetings, assessing and progress monitoring individual students, selecting and adapting instructional tools, scoring and interpreting achievement tests, collecting and reviewing pertinent information, preparing written reports, participating in identifying goals and objectives, developing IEPs, maintaining ongoing evaluation systems, providing information to parents, students, and school staff, designing and implementing programs, utilizing and providing appropriate materials, adapting teaching methods, implementing a program for continuity and consistency, establishing rapport and promoting student learning, promoting positive self-concept and respect, demonstrating knowledge of established curriculum, maintaining confidentiality, observing and complying with timelines and requirements, following legal requirements regarding suspected child abuse reporting, facilitating student's inclusion process, collaborating with staff, parents, and agencies, training school staff, establishing and maintaining student/program files, evaluating students, evaluating effectiveness of strategies and techniques, emphasizing academic achievement, utilizing district's established Seclusion and Physical Restraint procedures, attending required meetings and professional development opportunities, and performing any other duties as assigned.

Physical requirements include standing, sitting, and/or moving about for sustained periods, exercising physical control over students, ability to physically restrain students based on district's procedures, ability to lift and transition students, and maintaining a professional demeanor during periods of heightened stress.
