Job Overview
Under general supervision from the Education Program Manager, the Education Attendance Officer enforces SRPMIC Truancy Ordinance and applicable school attendance laws, policies, and procedures for students between the ages of five (5) and eighteen (18) years. Monitors daily student attendance and investigates absences. Issues citations to students that fail to comply with school attendance requirements.
Primary Job Functions- Meets daily with the Education Attendance Liaisons and Administrators to review student attendance, obtain truancy referrals, and provide updates on students in violation of the Truancy Ordinance. Contacts surrounding school districts where Community student attends to check daily attendance and investigate absences. Contacts parents daily to inform them of their child’s absence. Patrols surrounding areas near school grounds to assist with the prevention of truancy.
- Contacts and confers with students, parents and legal guardians regarding school attendance/truancy problems. Makes home visits to determine reasons for student’s absences as needed. Transports students that miss the bus to school when needed to prevent them from missing school.
- Investigates absences and compiles information for the purpose of referring students for appropriate services and/or Tribal Court for citation violations. Documents and maintains accurate records of citations issued and visits conducted with students and parents for use in later court proceeding if required. Refers students or parents to appropriate referral agency if intervention is necessary.
- Monitors and enforces Truancy Ordinance for all SRPMIC students attending various schools. Issues citations for absences and tardiness. Maintains accurate documentation and records on all students found in violation of the Truancy Ordinance. Properly documents, secures and maintains all official school documentation and records on student cases being referred to court. Maintains daily log of all confidential records, files, and pending court cases for truancy violations.
- Consults with Prosecutors for the purpose of seeking direction on truancy cases being referred to Tribal Court. Writes and submits reports on students with serious school attendance violations through the Prosecutor’s office. Prepares court documentation and provides testimony in court in regards to investigations on students undergoing court proceeding for failure to comply with truancy requirements.
- Meets with Mesa Public Schools District school officials, the Native American Education Program Coordinator, and SRPMIC Education Behavioral Health Counselors on a monthly basis to discuss truancy issues and other factors that may interfere with student attendance and educational progress.
- Assists schools in developing a truancy process that is aligned with the Community’s Truancy Ordinance. Educates and provides presentations to Community students/parents and school officials to explain the Community Truancy process and answer questions or concerns related to the ordinance. Gathers and compiles statistics on student attendance and keeps school officials informed of adverse trends.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
