Job Description

Under the supervision of the principal and athletic director, the head coach coordinates and administers the JV baseball program within the guidelines of the National Federation of High Schools, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Diocese of Phoenix, school policies, and the specific conference. The coach contributes to fostering the Catholic School culture by serving as a witness to students and the community, cooperating with Christ in the academic, spiritual, and social education of students, obtaining necessary certificates, participating in ongoing professional development, maintaining accurate records, and serving as a mentor and campus minister.

The position requires strong communication skills via phone and email, accurate and timely completion of duties, flexibility, forward thinking, deadline management, and continual pursuit of modern coaching practices. Creativity and latitude are expected.

Essential Job Functions
  • Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and training necessary for individual and team success while promoting the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program; maintain discipline, handle grievances, and increase morale.
  • Establish philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the staff; supervise and evaluate staff performance and overall program functioning.
  • Assist the athletic director in recruiting and retaining coaches, scheduling contests, promoting the sport, and making program enhancements.
  • Ensure the venue and equipment are safe, within regulation, properly maintained, and inventoried.
  • Coordinate supervision of student‑athletes across all areas of play and locker rooms.
  • Maintain open communication with faculty, staff, and parents; advise student‑athletes on academics; assist in college recruiting and scholarship applications with the athletic director and guidance staff.
  • Perform other job‑related tasks as requested by the principal or athletic director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Personal self‑discipline, adaptability, and flexibility in routine and unexpected situations.
  • Good judgment in daily encounters; verbal and written language proficiency.
  • Appropriate sense of humor.
  • Knowledge of good teaching techniques and child psychology.
  • Appropriate grooming and dress as stated in the faculty handbook.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
Physical Demands

The employee regularly stands, sits, walks, uses hands, reaches, talks, and hears; lifts or moves up to 50 pounds; requires close and distance vision; stands for extended periods outdoors in various temperatures; moderate noise levels; requires evening and weekend hours.

Evaluation

Performance is evaluated in accordance with procedures developed by the Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory under the principal’s direction.

Terms of Employment

Stipend position based on the sport season; base salaries and stipends established by the Leadership Team under Diocese guidance; mandatory days and extra responsibilities schedule provided before the new school year.

Minimum Qualification
  • Preference given to Catholic teachers.
  • Must meet Diocese of Phoenix employment requirements.
  • Completed Safe Environment Training and signed Code of Conduct.
  • AZ fingerprint clearance completed.
  • Current Arizona State driver’s license desirable.
  • Good physical condition; initiative, creativity, problem‑solving, judgment, listening, positive attitude, teamwork, delegation, and knowledge of good teaching techniques and child psychology.
