Job DescriptionUnder the supervision of the principal and the athletic director, the assistant coach helps to coordinate and administer the sport for which they are responsible within the guidelines, rules, and regulations of the National Federation of High Schools, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Diocese of Phoenix, the school, the athletic department, and the specific sport and conference.
The coach contributes to fostering the Catholic school culture by serving as a witness to students and the community. They cooperate with Christ in the academic, spiritual and social education of students, maintain necessary certificates, participate in professional development, maintain accurate records, and serve as a campus minister/mentor to students.
Responsibilities- Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy and training to achieve individual and team success, promote the Pursuing Victory with Honor Program, and maintain discipline and morale.
- Assist in overall functioning of the specific sport program.
- Assist the Head Coach in ensuring the venue and equipment are safe, regulated, properly maintained and inventoried.
- Coordinate supervision of student-athletes in all areas of play, locker rooms, and venues.
- Maintain communication with faculty, staff, and parents; advise athletes on academics; support college recruiting and scholarship applications in conjunction with athletic director and guidance staff.
- Perform additional job‑related tasks as requested by the principal or athletic director.
- Demonstrate personal self‑discipline, adaptability, and flexibility in routine or unexpected situations.
- Use good judgment in daily encounters and correct verbal and written language.
- Maintain appropriate sense of humor.
- Understand good teaching techniques and child psychology.
- Maintain appropriate grooming and dress as stated in faculty handbook.
- Work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Be in good physical condition.
- Demonstrate initiative, creativity, problem solving, and good judgment in handling personalities and emerging situations.
- Active listening to assess individual students, teachers, and program needs.
- Proficient communication skills with both children and adults.
- Positive attitude in normal and crisis situations.
- Collaborate effectively with others and delegate as needed.
- Preference given to Catholic teachers.
- Certified by Arizona State Department of Education or AIA as a coach and meets NCA requirements.
- Meet Diocese of Phoenix employment requirements.
- Received Safe Environment Training and signed the Code of Conduct.
- FBI Fingerprint clearance completed.
- Current Arizona State driver’s license desirable.
Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands, reach, talk and hear. Must lift or move up to 50 pounds. Must stand for periods outdoors in heat and cold. Noise level moderate. Requires some evening and weekend hours.
EvaluationPerformance evaluated per Diocese of Phoenix and Notre Dame Preparatory policies under principal and athletic director.
Terms of EmploymentStipend based on season of sport coached. Leadership Team establishes base salaries and stipends. Schedule of mandatory days and extra responsibilities provided prior to new school year.
