Position Summary – This full‑time Mortgage Underwriter III renders a final decision (e.g., approval, disapproval, approval with conditions) for mortgage loan applications in a timely, accurate and compliant manner. The role reviews loan applications based on capacity, credit history, capital, and collateral while ensuring compliance with company policy, investor guidelines, lending programs, and state and federal laws.

Responsibilities
  • Render a final underwriting decision (approved, suspended, denied) for mortgage loan applications based on capacity, credit history, capital and collateral.
  • Apply underwriting rules from multiple sources to accurately and consistently review individual loan applications and formulate approval conditions as appropriate.
  • Verify that each loan file contains accurate, compliant and complete documentation, including appraisal review and decision.
  • Answer questions from loan officers, loan processors and other personnel about underwriting rules and their application to specific loan applications.
  • Perform necessary computer‑based functions for internal and external IT systems and conduct online research.
  • Meet short deadlines related to underwriting and closing.
  • Ensure compliance with company policy, investor guidelines, lending programs and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform the job in accordance with industry laws, regulations, and company procedures.
Education & Experience Preferred
  • Graduation from a 4‑year college or university with a related major.
  • 10+ years of underwriting experience or a combination of mortgage processing and underwriting.
  • Conventional FNMA & FHLMC experience.
  • FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) approved.
  • Veterans Administration (VA) Lender Appraisal Processing Program (LAPP/SAR) experience.
  • Preferred: minimum of two specialty areas such as Portfolio Lending, Construction One Time/Two Time Close, or Jumbo Non‑Conforming.
  • USDA knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge of Construction One Time and Two Time Close underwriting.
  • Knowledge of Jumbo Non‑Conforming Service Release underwriting.
  • Knowledge of Down payment assistance programs.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organization and multi‑tasking skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Working Conditions

The physical demands of this position require the ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Employees may spend extended periods sitting or standing, using hands to operate computers or other equipment, and reaching for work‑related tasks. Regular walking may be required, along with occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing. The role may involve lifting or moving items weighing up to 10 pounds.

Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
